Motorcycle, ATV and UTV specs, prices and ownership guides

Compare motorcycle, ATV and side-by-side specifications by brand and model range. The ownership guides cover oil ratings, tire fitment, recall lookups, route access and hauling. Five calculators handle tire and gearing changes, service counters, trailer loads and tie-down arithmetic.

Ownership guides that apply to every machine

Ask what oil goes in a motorcycle and you get brand arguments. Ask what classification of oil a wet clutch needs and there is one answer, set by a published friction test that has been the same for decades. Ask how many straps a machine needs on a trailer and you get opinions; the federal cargo rules give two tests with defined numbers.

The guides cover that fixed half of ownership in full, name the regulation or standard on the page where it is used, and point to the manual for the part that varies by machine.

Street motorcyclesThe only class that is a motor vehicle under federal law.
ATVsOff-highway consumer product; service counters depend on the model
UTVs and side-by-sidesGoverned by a voluntary industry standard, which also carries a documented weight and cargo problem.

The five things people arrive looking for

One oil lubricates the engine, is sheared by the gearbox and has to let a clutch grip. The friction rating on the bottle is what makes those compatible, and it is not the marking most people read.

Two tests apply at once: a minimum count set by length and weight, and an aggregate rating of half the cargo weight. Either can be the binding one, and the way you route a strap halves or doubles what it contributes.

A metric size hides the diameter. An inch size states it first. Reading one as the other is wrong by about a factor of three and still looks plausible.

This converts either into real dimensions.

State registration and land-manager route designation are separate permissions from separate authorities, and neither substitutes for the other. On federal land the published travel map controls.

What does this fault code mean

Structure, not tables

There is no universal powersports diagnostic port and no generic database of manufacturer code meanings. What is portable is the structure of a code, the connector you are looking at, and the order that avoids replacing the wrong part.

Three counters

A schedule states miles, hours and months. Whichever arrives first governs. On a seasonal machine that is the calendar; on a working machine it is the hour meter.

Enter your own intervals and it reports the shortest.

Motorcycle, ATV and UTV specs, prices and ownership guides

Motorcycle ATV UTV Specs lists the specifications, starting prices and closest rivals of 362 current motorcycles, ATVs and side-by-sides from 13 brands, with a written page for each machine. Beside the models are guides to the rules that apply to any of them: oil ratings, tire sizes, tie-down law, trail access and service intervals, plus five calculators that do the arithmetic. A machine's own manual still sets its capacities, torque figures and service intervals.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask
Is the price on a model page what I will pay?; No. It is the maker's starting MSRP with the destination charge listed on its own row. Dealer fees, options, color surcharges, taxes and local pricing come on top, so ask a dealer for an out-the-door figure before you compare machines.

Which should I buy first, a motorcycle, an ATV or a side-by-side?

Start from the job. A street motorcycle is the only one of the three that is a motor vehicle under federal law, an ATV carries one rider and suits trails and light work, and a side-by-side carries passengers and cargo but weighs far more. The motorcycle vs ATV vs UTV guide matches the machine to the use.

What is the difference between state OHV registration and trail access?

They are two separate permissions from two separate authorities, and neither substitutes for the other. State registration and a land manager's published travel map, which controls on federal land, both have to be satisfied on their own.

Is there a fault code database for my machine?

No universal one exists: powersports machines have no standard diagnostic port and each maker defines its own codes. What carries across machines is the structure of a code, the connector you are looking at and the order that avoids replacing the wrong part first, which the codes guides cover.

Why does reading a tire size wrong matter so much?

A metric tire size hides the diameter and an inch size states it directly. Reading one convention as the other is wrong by roughly a factor of three and still looks plausible, which is the error the tire size change calculator exists to catch.

What is the difference between a service interval set by miles, hours and months?

A schedule states all three and means whichever arrives first. Miles or hours track use and months track calendar time regardless of use, so a seasonal machine is usually limited by the calendar and a hard-working machine by its hour meter. The service interval planner reports your shortest interval.

How do I find a specific model?

Open Models, choose motorcycles, ATVs or side-by-sides, then pick the brand. The brand page lists each model, and the model page carries the specification table and the model years.

Can I compare two models side by side?

Each model page has a comparison table against rival models that are also on this site, so the figures in the table come from the same kind of source as the rest of the site.

Which machine suits a first-time rider or owner?

A first motorcycle should be light, low and modest in power: look for a seat height you can flat-foot and a small single- or twin-cylinder engine. A first ATV should match the rider's age tier, and a first side-by-side should be sized by what it must carry and tow. Each model page lists seat height and weight, and the license and sizing guide covers fit.
