How the side-by-side brands differ
Polaris has the broadest range, from a $6,499 youth Ranger to a $43,999 RZR Pro R, and its Ranger 1000 at $14,299 tows 2,500 lb. Can-Am's Defender at $14,999 matches that tow rating and its Maverick sport machines run to $39,699. Kawasaki's Mule and Ridge lines are the workhorses, from $9,499 to $21,599, and its supercharged Teryx H2 costs $32,899.
Yamaha's Wolverine trail machines run from $16,499 to $25,999 and tow 2,000 lb. Honda's Pioneer range seats two to five, and Arctic Cat's Prowler family is the smallest, from $10,799 to $31,299.
Which kind of side-by-side for which job
Utility machines carry a bed load of 450 to 1,500 lb and tow 1,000 to 3,500 lb, and seat two to six: choose the bed and tow ratings first. Sport machines, such as the RZR, Maverick, Talon and Teryx KRX, carry only 200 to 351 lb and are built for speed and suspension travel, with prices from $16,999 to $43,999. Crossovers such as the Polaris General and Can-Am Commander sit between the two.
Bed capacity is often lower in California, for example 600 lb against 1,000 lb on the Kawasaki Ridge, so check the figure for your state.
What the weight and capacity numbers mean
Weights on these pages use different bases (dry, wet or curb, sometimes with accessories), and ATVpedia warns that Arctic Cat's dry figures leave out some fluids, so compare like with like. A side-by-side's tow rating and bed limit are separate: a Wolverine RMAX4 tows 2,000 lb but its bed holds 600 lb, and the machine itself weighs 2,381 lb wet. Total load, passengers and cargo together, should stay under the manufacturer's stated capacity.
