Taller ATV tires: the numbers behind a two-inch change
A 25-to-27-inch worked example, rpm change and axle-height change, with the remaining fitment and calibration limits.
Blog
Changing nominal diameter from 25 to 27 inches increases distance per wheel turn by 8%. At the same road speed, engine rpm would be about 7.41% lower if the transmission and final-drive ratios stayed fixed.
The axle center rises one inch. These are geometric calculations, not a recommendation that either tire fits a particular ATV.
Why the two percentage changes are different
Distance per turn scales by new diameter divided by old: 27 ÷ 25 = 1.08. At a fixed road speed the required wheel-turn count instead scales by old divided by new: 25 ÷ 27 = 0.925926.
One calculation uses the old diameter as its denominator and the other uses the new diameter. That is why an 8% distance increase corresponds to a 7.41% decrease in required revolutions.

- The counts describe the covered specifications
- They do not establish interchangeable fitments. Front and rear tires can have different diameters, widths, load ratings and intended rim widths.
A driven axle or four-wheel-drive system can also impose rolling-circumference limits. Follow the model’s specified pairing.
Do not use a fleet-wide common size as an approval to fit that size.
Four checks remain after the arithmetic
Confirm the tire and rim match, clearance through steering and suspension travel, the required load and speed ratings, and the consequences for gearing and calibration. A larger nominal diameter adds only half that increase to radius. Actual molded dimensions and loaded rolling circumference can differ from the nominal size.
A wheel-speed-based instrument calibrated for the old tire would under-record distance after an increase in rolling circumference. A GPS-based speed display would not change by that same mechanism.
A CVT can also change its operating ratio under load, so the fixed-ratio rpm calculation is not a prediction of every operating condition. Use the tire-size calculator for your sizes and the fitment guide for interpreting the markings.
The diameter counts use explicit inch-system front-tire markings, separate from the hypothetical 25-to-27-inch calculation. Reviewed October 18, 2026.

- Taller tires on a quad: the arithmetic of a two-inch swap; 15 of 44 ATVs start on 25-inch tires. What two more inches does.
Blog
The most common ATV front tire stands 25 inches tall, on 15 of 44 models with a stated tire size. UTVs run taller, with a median of 27 inches. Swap a 25-inch tire for one 2 inches taller and the wheel travels 8 percent farther per turn. The speedometer then reads low, so 43.2 mph true speed shows as 40.
The engine turns about 7.4 percent slower at the same road speed, the axle sits 1 inch higher, and the odometer records 7.4 percent less distance than you cover. The comparison records on this page runs the same arithmetic for every stock diameter in the lineup, and the sections explain what each change means for a real machine.

What is on the lineup today
Tire sizes read as overall diameter, then width, then rim diameter; a 25 x 8-12 tire stands 25 inches tall, is 8 inches wide and fits a 12-inch rim. The overall diameter is the number that sets every change below.
Of the 51 ATVs, 44 have a front tire size stated as diameter, width and rim. The median stands 25 inches. The most common is 25, on 15 models; the range runs from 16 to 27 inches.
- Of the 49 UTVs, 38 state one
- The median is 27 inches, and the most common size is 30, on 8 models. The range runs from 22 to 32.
- Two inches taller: the numbers
- A taller tire covers more ground each turn; the ratio of the new diameter to the old sets every other change. Going from 22 to 24 inches is a ratio of 1.091. Going from 25 to 27 is 1.080.

The smaller the stock tire, the larger the change. Two inches added to a 22-inch tire is 9.1 percent. Two inches added to a 30-inch tire is 6.7 percent.
What each change means
The speedometer reads low. The instrument counts wheel turns; a taller tire covers more distance per turn, so the same count means a faster true speed. On a 25 to 27 swap, a reading of 40 is really 43.2 mph.
The odometer records less. It runs off the same count, so it under-records by 7.4 percent after a 25 to 27 swap; that matters on a machine with a mileage-based service interval. Many quads schedule by hours, which the swap does not touch.
Effective gearing rises. A taller tire acts like a taller final drive. At the same road speed the engine turns 7.4 percent slower; the same engine then has less mechanical advantage at low speed, and a belt-driven machine runs its drive belt harder at crawl speeds.
The axle rises. Height gain is half the diameter change, so 1.0 inch for a 2-inch swap. It adds ground clearance under the axle, and the tire also grows taller in the fender, so clearance at full lock and full travel needs a physical check.
What the arithmetic does not settle
The numbers give the change. They do not say whether the change is safe or wise on your machine. Three things need a check.
Load rating. A taller tire often comes with a different ply construction; the tire must still carry the machine's load, and the sidewall rating matters most on a heavy machine.
Clearance. A 2-inch increase in diameter adds 1 inch of radius. Measure at full suspension travel and full steering lock before you order.
Wheel width. A wider wheel changes the track and the offset, which the bolt pattern and offset page covers separately.
Do it for your own size
The tire size change calculator takes any stock and replacement size and returns every figure in the comparison records on this page; the ATV and UTV tire size page explains how to read the size on the sidewall.
Taller tires on a quad: worked numbers questions
What is the most common ATV tire diameter on current models?
25 inches on the front, on 15 of 44 ATVs with a stated size; the median is 25 inches, and the range runs from 16 to 27.
How tall are UTV tires compared with ATV tires?
Taller. The median front UTV tire stands 27 inches against 25 for ATVs; the most common UTV size is 30 inches, on 8 models.
What happens to the speedometer with taller tires?
It reads low. A 25 to 27 inch swap makes the wheel cover 8 percent more ground per turn, so a reading of 40 mph is really 43.2 mph.
Does the odometer under-record with taller tires?
Yes, by the same proportion as the speedometer. After a 25 to 27 swap it records about 7.4 percent less than you travel, which matters for any mileage-based service interval.
How does a taller tire change engine speed?
It lowers it at a given road speed, like a taller final drive; a 25 to 27 swap cuts engine speed about 7.4 percent at the same road speed.
How much does a two-inch taller tire raise the axle?
One inch. Axle height gain is half the change in overall diameter, because the tire adds height equally above and below the hub.
Is a two-inch swap a bigger change on a small tire?
Yes. Two inches on a 22-inch tire is 9.1 percent, against 6.7 percent on a 30-inch tire.
Do taller tires ride better?
The arithmetic cannot say. A taller tire changes gearing, clearance and load on the drivetrain in the ways listed here. How it rides depends on the tire, the pressure and the terrain.
Will taller tires hurt a belt-driven machine?
They raise effective gearing, so the engine has less mechanical advantage at low speed. On a belt-driven machine that means more belt heat at crawl speeds. Check the manufacturer's tire size limits.
How do I read an ATV tire size like 25 x 8-12?
Overall diameter 25 inches, section width 8 inches, rim diameter 12 inches; the first number is the one that sets speedometer error and gearing change.
Where can I run this arithmetic for my own tires?
The tire size change calculator takes your stock and replacement sizes and returns each of these figures, with the formula shown on the page.
