Setting it up for a young rider

Kawasaki specifies ages 10 and older for the KFX90
a move from a 50cc ATV does not by itself establish readiness.

KFX90 against the QuadSport Z90 and TRX90X

Suzuki's QuadSport Z90 and Honda's TRX90X are the other 90cc youth quads.

Before treating a larger ATV as the next step, read CPSC’s youth-ATV guidance: a rider under 16 belongs on an age-appropriate youth model, never an adult ATV. Kawasaki’s minimum age is only one part of that decision.

Kawasaki · Youth

The KFX90 is Kawasaki's 90cc youth ATV, aimed at beginners and younger riders. Wild Ride ATV says a common owner problem is starting, and that it may not give enough power to more experienced riders, and Kawasaki asks $3,449; 2027 Kawasaki KFX 90 specifications and price.

What owners say

Wild Ride ATV says one common problem reported by some KFX90 owners is starting issues, and that reported problems with starting and suspension performance can be addressed through proper maintenance and, if necessary, upgrades. The report calls the four-stroke air-cooled engine reliable, delivering smooth and consistent power, but says the KFX90 is primarily designed for beginners and younger riders, so it may not provide enough power for more experienced riders or those seeking high-speed performance.

What the specifications imply

Kawasaki lists a chain drive, a 25.6 in seat, 3.9 in of ground clearance and a 1.4 gal tank. The seat matches Suzuki's Z90 exactly at 25.6 in, and the price is $35 below the Suzuki at $3,484. The KFX90 is a 2WD quad for smooth ground, and its clearance is 2.0 in below the Suzuki's 5.9 in.

Buying notes

Starting is the complaint to check. Warm and cold start it, and look at the carburettor and fuel for staleness. Check the chain, sprockets and rear axle. Test the throttle limiter and any tether. Ask about the age of the previous rider. Look at the tires and brake cables.

Setting it up for a young rider

Check the fit before the first ride: the child should be able to reach both brake levers and turn the handlebar to full lock while seated. Set any throttle limiter low at first and use the tether if one is fitted. Start on flat, open ground with no traffic and stay close. Protective gear, a helmet, gloves, eye protection and boots, should be bought with the quad.

Because Wild Ride ATV says the power may not be enough for an experienced rider, plan on selling or trading up when the child has outgrown the KFX90's size and speed.

Who it suits

The KFX90 suits a child ready to move up from a 50cc and supervised by an adult. It is not for an older or heavier teenager.

2027 Kawasaki KFX 90 questions

What problems do Kawasaki KFX90 owners report?

Wild Ride ATV says a common problem reported by some owners is starting issues, which proper maintenance and upgrades may address.

Is the Kawasaki KFX90 powerful?

Wild Ride ATV says it is designed for beginners and younger riders and may not give enough power for experienced riders or high-speed use.

How tall is the Kawasaki KFX90?

Kawasaki lists a 25.6 in seat, the same as Suzuki's QuadSport Z90, on a chain-drive two-wheel-drive youth quad.

Stepping up without assuming a fit

Although the KFX90 shares a 38.0-inch published wheelbase with the KFX50, the engine and tire package differ. Its 89.9cc displacement and 25.6-inch seat should be evaluated with the rider's ability to operate the complete machine. The age and supervision instructions still apply. Growing out of a smaller quad is a reason to reassess the fit, not automatic permission to use the next engine size.

The front AT18x7-8 and rear AT18x9-8 tire designations specify different widths. A used quad may have tires chosen by a previous owner, so compare the actual sidewalls with the approved fitment. Inspect for rubbing and damaged rims rather than relying on tread depth alone. Changes to tire diameter can also change effective gearing.

At the listed $3,449, this KFX costs $750 more than the fifty. Include a correctly fitting helmet and the rest of the required riding equipment in the budget before comparing dealer payments. The right question is whether the complete supervised setup suits the intended rider, not whether the bigger engine gives more capacity per dollar.
