Can-Am Defender DPS HD9 specifications

Can-Am · Utility

ATVpedia says the HD9 gives a three-seat work machine the 65 hp Rotax V-twin, power steering, a 1,000 lb cargo box and a 2,500 lb tow rating without the price of a roofed, winch-equipped XT.

It cautions that the 2,500 lb figure is published but load distribution, tongue weight, grade and the owner's manual still matter, and says that if your day involves repeated low-speed maneuvering, hill starts or hauling, the engine and gearing are better reasons to upgrade than the larger displacement number alone.

Can-Am Defender DPS HD9 — specification reference

Off-Road Official says the Defender cabs are spacious with good legroom in front and back, and that the driver's seat slides forward and back for legs of all lengths, and explains that the HD9 and HD10 have the same size engine, with the HD10 tuned for more power and slightly better low-end grunt, towing and acceleration.

Can-Am lists a double A-arm front and a TTA rear with an external sway bar, twin-tube gas-charged shocks and 10 in of travel at each end, an 83 in wheelbase and 11 in of ground clearance. Tires are XPS Trail Force 27 x 9-14, drive is selectable Turf Mode, 2WD or 4WD with an auto-locking front differential, and the tank holds 10.6 gal. The machine weighs an estimated 1,545 lb dry.

Defender HD9 against the rivals

At $14,999 the HD9 costs $700 more than Polaris's Ranger 1000 at $14,299, and $3,700 less than Kawasaki's Mule Pro-DX at $18,699. It weighs 1,545 lb estimated dry against 1,487 lb for the Ranger 1000. Polaris's Ranger XP 1000 Premium is $21,799 and Honda's Pioneer 1000-5 Deluxe is $22,399.

So the HD9 is one of the cheapest machines with a 2,500 lb tow rating.

Defender DPS HD9 against the Ranger 1000 and Mule Pro-DX

Polaris's Ranger 1000 is the direct price rival, and Kawasaki's Mule Pro-DX is the diesel alternative.

The Can-Am Defender DPS HD9 is Can-Am's mid-power utility side-by-side, running the 976cc V-twin, rated at 65 hp and 59 lb-ft, in the Defender DPS package instead of the base 650cc single. It has a three-seat cab, a 1,000 lb cargo box (600 lb in California), a 2,500 lb tow rating and power steering, at $14,999.

Can-Am rates the 976cc Rotax V-twin at 65 hp and 59 lb-ft. Off-Road Official says the HD10 uses the same size engine tuned for more power.

Can-Am lists 2,500 lb, with a 1,000 lb cargo bed (600 lb in California). ATVpedia advises checking tongue weight, grade and the manual before towing near the limit.

Identify the DPS configuration before comparing offers

Ask the seller to identify the exact HD9 model and steering equipment on the written offer. A similar-looking Defender can have different cab accessories, seating or work equipment. Compare those items with the intended occupants and cargo before choosing by engine name or a monthly payment.

On a used vehicle, inspect hitch and box wear alongside the service record and ask about modifications to tires or suspension. The actual configuration and load instructions decide the working arrangement, rather than the amount of empty space visible in a sales photograph.
