Kawasaki Mule Pro-DX EPS — specification reference

The Pro-DX uses a 993cc three-cylinder diesel, so fuel and service requirements differ from the gasoline Pro-FX. Its bed rating and towing rating are separate limits. A full bed does not create additional capacity for occupants, accessories or trailer tongue load.

The Kawasaki Mule Pro-DX EPS is the diesel Mule Pro: a 993cc three-cylinder liquid-cooled diesel rated at 24 hp, with electric power steering and three-across seating. Kawasaki lists a 999 lb cargo bed, a 2,000 lb tow rating, a 7.9 gal tank and a 1,885 lb curb weight, from $18,699 plus destination; 2027 Kawasaki Mule Pro-DX EPS specifications and price.

Why a diesel

UTV Guide explains the design: the diesel is tuned for predictable low-speed power when hauling cargo, towing equipment or working across uneven terrain, emphasizing pulling power and durability, and it suits operators who already run other equipment on diesel fuel. The 24 hp figure looks small next to the 70 hp of the Pro-FX 1000. The trade is low-speed torque and fuel commonality.

Time for Wheels says the 993cc liquid-cooled engine has enough power for hauling and towing, that the CVT and selectable four-wheel drive give flexibility, and that the wheelbase is 92.3 inches for steady handling. The write-up also notes the suspension travel may feel more than necessary on smooth ground, giving a slightly softer ride than a sport-focused utility machine.

Dash and controls

UTV Guide lists the multifunction display: a digital speedometer, fuel gauge, odometer, hour meter, clock, two trip meters and indicators for the drivetrain, engine, CVT, power steering, parking brake and seat belts. The hour meter is the item that matters on a working machine, because service intervals for a diesel run on hours.

Diesel or gas Mule Pro

At $18,699 the DX costs $3,500 more than the 812cc gas Pro-FX 820 at $15,199 and $1,000 more than the Pro-FX 1000 HD at $17,699, and it makes about a third of the horsepower. Choose it only if you value running one fuel across a farm or shop, or if low-speed torque matters more than road speed. For mixed work with more speed, the gas Mule Pro machines are the better fit.

ATVConnection says the Mule Pro-DX EPS Diesel has a 993cc diesel engine, a one-ton towing capacity and the largest cargo bed in its class, and calls the Pro diesel series suited to ranches, job sites, farms and fleets.

Farmers Weekly tested a diesel Mule and says what it lacks in performance and handling it makes up in build quality and practicality, with the largest load bed on test and a roomy bench seat. It also warns that when cruising on flat ground the lack of power was not a problem, but adding weight and going uphill showed it up.

Polaris's Ranger 1000 and Can-Am's Defender XU HD11 are the gasoline utility rivals. Both are far more powerful and neither runs on diesel.
