Four-wheel, six-wheel and battery-electric Outlanders

Outlander. The Outlander DPS 700 and Can-Am Pro XT use a 650cc engine, the Can-Am 1000R uses a 1,001cc engine, the 6x6 has three axles, and the Outlander Electric is battery powered.

Sport and youth. The Renegade is the sport ATV, and the Can-Am DS is the youth model.

Which Can-Am ATV to buy

The Outlander DPS 700 at $8,749 is the cheapest full-size, with a 1,830 lb braked-trailer rating. Electrek says the Outlander Electric is silent at low speed and low-maintenance, and Dirt Wheels says its Rotax battery has a five-year warranty. It costs $13,249, which is $3,250 above Honda's Rubicon 700.

What to check before buying a Can-Am ATV

Tow ratings are quoted on a braked-trailer basis on most Outlanders, so check what your trailer has. Seat heights run from 31.5 in on the DS to 38.6 in on the Outlander Pro XT, which is tall for a shorter rider. The Outlander Electric needs a place to charge and a real-world range figure for your rides.

A used Outlander should come with a record of belt and coolant service, since a CVT belt is the usual wear item. Ask whether the price includes the destination charge, and compare prices out the door.

Can-Am against the other ATV brands

On price, the Outlander DPS 700 at $8,749 sits above Honda's Rancher 4x4 at $7,399 and Yamaha's Kodiak 450 at $7,799, but it tows 1,830 lb where they tow 848 lb or list none. The Renegade X xc 1000R at $16,249 costs about the same as Polaris's Scrambler XP 1000 S at $16,499 and Yamaha's YFZ450R is $5,250 cheaper at $10,999, so the Can-Am is at the top of the sport class.

The Outlander 6x6 at $14,499 is the only six-wheeler here besides Polaris's Sportsman 6x6 at $14,999, and it tows 2,475 lb.

Checks specific to Can-Am ATVs

Ask which Outlander engine you are being quoted, since the 650, the 1,001cc and the electric model differ in price by thousands of dollars. Check the seat height against the rider, because the Outlander Pro XT is 38.6 in and the Renegade 34.5 in. Confirm the tow rating applies to a braked trailer, and ask whether the price includes the destination charge.

Ask what the Outlander Electric's charger and battery warranty cover, and how far it goes on your terrain.
