How testers describe it
ATV on Demand tested the 1000R X xc and said the power is enough for most trail riders, while the suspension could be beefed up for dedicated sport riding. The X xc package has 25-inch tires on 12-inch aluminum beadlock wheels, fully adjustable FOX Podium shocks and tapered aluminum bars with full-wrap handguards.
The reviewer calls the machine surprisingly agile for a 795 lb dry weight, partly because of Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering, and describes dual hydraulic front discs with one rear disc for stopping.
Dirt Wheels says the Rotax V-twin is second to none for power output and that the wide-range tunable suspension works well.
Reported problems
The xc is for a rider who wants the fastest quad on the trail and will adjust the suspension. Its 1,300 lb tow rating is a secondary use. At $16,249 it costs about the same as Polaris's Scrambler XP 1000 S at $16,499 and is 157 lb lighter than the Polaris's 952 lb.
The list price carries a destination charge and dealer fees, so ask for an out-the-door quote before comparing it with a Polaris or a Yamaha. A sport quad wears tires, brake pads and belts quickly on hard use, so budget for them. Add a helmet, goggles, gloves and boots, and a whip flag for dunes.
A used Renegade should come with a record of belt and coolant service.
Renegade X xc 1000R against the Scrambler XP 1000 S and Raptor 700R
Polaris's Scrambler XP 1000 S is the twin-cylinder rival at a similar price, and Yamaha's Raptor 700R is a much lighter single at $5,450 less. Read weight and price first.
A specifications-and-problems summary reports that some riders find the suspension performance a common issue and that a few owners have reported belt slippage, especially on steep inclines or under a heavy tow. It advises regular belt inspection and tension adjustment. These are anecdotal summaries, so check the belt and shocks on a used machine and ask whether the machine has been ridden hard.
The X xc is the trail and sport trim with FOX Podium RC2 shocks and 25-inch tires. The X mr is the mud-oriented trim with a snorkeled setup.
