Rider Magazine’s 2024 first ride reports a 14,600 rpm redline for the M 1000 XR, compared with 12,000 rpm for the S 1000 XR. That is a dated comparison of those configurations, rather than a claim that every XR has the same engine tune.
For a touring purchase, check the actual screen, seat, luggage mounting and fitted wheel package along with the engine specification. A bike ordered with an M Competition package can have different equipment and weight from the base configuration.
BMW · Sport touring
The BMW M 1000 XR is BMW's 999cc M sport-touring bike, rated at 201 hp and 83 lb-ft, listed for the 2027 model year. It has DDC electronic suspension, a 5.3 gal tank and a top speed of 170 mph, and BMW prices it at $25,695 plus $1,095 destination.
1000PS says the bike should not be reduced to its engine and massive power, because the braking, handling, electronics and fine suspension are at least as impressive.
The write-up says the seat, at 850 millimeters high, is not overly firm and lets you ride the M XR for extended periods without discomfort, and that if you are not sensitive to noise or have knee issues you can ride the M 1000 XR longer distances comfortably, as its fuel consumption is only slightly higher than the S 1000 XR's.
Rider Magazine says the redline leaps from the S 1000 XR's 12,000 rpm to 14,600 rpm, a seriously high engine speed aided by lightweight titanium valves.
BMW lists a 45 mm upside-down fork with electronic DDC Dynamic Damping Control, twin 320 mm front discs with four-piston fixed calipers and a 220 mm rear disc, and a 60.9 in wheelbase with 4.62 in of trail. Peak torque is 83 lb-ft at 11,000 rpm and the road-ready weight is 492 lb.
M 1000 XR against the sport-tourers.
At $25,695 it costs $11,096 more than Suzuki's GSX-S1000GT+ at $14,599 and $11,696 more than Kawasaki's Ninja 1100SX at $13,999, and weighs 492 lb against 498 lb and 518.2 lb. Yamaha's Tracer 9 is $12,599 at 483 lb. BMW's own S 1000 XR is $18,825, $6,870 less. The M XR buys the highest-revving engine and the electronic suspension.
Where the M XR sits in the XR range
BMW sells three XR bikes. The F 900 XR at $12,695 has an 895cc twin making 105 hp; the S 1000 XR at $18,825 has the 999cc four at 170 hp. And the M 1000 XR at $25,695 has the same four tuned to 201 hp with a 14,600 rpm redline.
The M weighs 492 lb road-ready, 8 lb less than the S at 500 lb, and has a 5.3 gal tank against the S's 5.2 gal. Its wheelbase is 60.9 in, 0.3 in longer than the S's, and its seat is 33.4 in against 33.5 in. The M XR's extra $6,870 over the S buys the rev range, the titanium valves and DDC suspension.
Noise, comfort and range
1000PS's caution about noise and knees is the practical note for a long-distance rider. 1000PS's caution refers to noise and to knee comfort, so try the position before buying a bike that revs to 14,600 rpm. The seat is firm enough to be supportive but not hard, which the same test says allows extended riding, and the 5.3 gal tank holds a bit more than the S's.
Fuel consumption is only slightly higher than the S 1000 XR's according to that test. So the running cost is close. Compare noise and position on a test ride, since those are personal.
Against the other sport tourers
The M 1000 XR costs $25,695, $6,870 more than the S 1000 XR at $18,825 and $13,000 more than the F 900 XR at $12,695. At 492 lb it is 8 lb lighter than the S 1000 XR and 16 lb heavier than the F 900 XR. Its 33.4 in seat is 0.1 in lower than the S 1000 XR's.
The 5.3 gal tank is 0.1 gal larger than the S 1000 XR's, so range is similar. The extra money buys the M-derived engine and chassis parts.

Suzuki's GSX-S1000GT+ and Kawasaki's Ninja 1100SX are the closest sport-touring rivals, both far cheaper.

How high does the BMW M 1000 XR rev?
Rider Magazine says the redline rises from the S 1000 XR's 12,000 rpm to 14,600 rpm, helped by lightweight titanium valves.
Is the BMW M 1000 XR comfortable for long rides?
1000PS says the 850 mm seat is not overly firm and you can ride longer distances comfortably if you are not sensitive to noise or have knee issues.
