Honda · Compact utility

It is not a machine for speed or for a large family. It seats two, and the same test put its top speed just shy of 40 mph on the model it tested, "plenty fast in a small machine." Honda's 2026 gearing change raises that figure by 23 percent.

How the Pioneer 520 drives

The Pioneer 520 shares its heritage with Honda's FourTrax Foreman quad. Dirt Wheels found the two drivetrains related: the engine sits with the crankshaft in line with the driveshafts, which avoids the 90-degree turns that waste power in most UTV layouts. The five-speed is shifted by paddles behind the steering wheel, and there is no low range.

But first gear is low enough to work as one. Ground clearance is 8.5 in, an inch less than the Foreman quad, and the tires are 24 in.

Pioneer 520 against the Mule SX and Ranger 500

Dirt Wheels put the Pioneer 520 against the Polaris Ranger 500 and found the Ranger the better-equipped machine and the Honda the narrower one.

The Ranger starts at $9,999 against the Honda's $10,999, and it comes standard with a roof, a 2,500 lb winch, a 2 in receiver and a Turf mode, plus more ground clearance, larger tires, more fuel, higher tow and payload ratings, more cab room and nearly twice the suspension travel, at 9 in front and 10 in rear.

The Honda's answer is width: 50 in against the Ranger's 58.5 in.

That opens trail systems that restrict machines wider than 50 in, and it fits in the bed of most full-size trucks.

Kawasaki's Mule SX 4x4 XC is the third option. At $9,499 it costs $1,500 less than the Pioneer and carries a 399 lb bed. But it has a 401cc air-cooled engine, a CVT and drum brakes at all four corners.

The Pioneer 520 fits a landowner or hunter with a trail system built for quads. Dirt Wheels summed it up as a machine that fits 50-inch quad trails, a pickup bed, a property and a budget, and pointed out that a 50-inch machine can go most places a big long-travel UTV can, but not the other way around.

The tilting bed carries up to 450 lb and the machine tows 1,000 lb, which the test called right for garden and field work: 5-gallon pails, materials, a small trailer.

Honda · Compact utility

The 2026 Honda Pioneer 520 is a 50-inch-wide compact side-by-side with a 518cc engine, a five-speed automatic, a 450 lb bed and a 1,000 lb tow rating. Its base price is $10,999, and destination adds $885. It is built for farm, ranch and property work, and it is narrow enough to follow ATV trails and fit in a full-size pickup bed.

Honda says its 2026 gearing raises top speed by 23 percent over the previous year. It is a slow, simple, durable machine and not a recreation UTV, and it suits an owner who wants a small utility vehicle that will not surprise them.

2026 Honda Pioneer 520 questions

How fast is a Honda Pioneer 520?

A magazine test of an earlier Pioneer 520 measured a top speed just under 40 mph. Honda says the 2026 model's revised gear ratios raise top speed by 23 percent, so a 2026 should be quicker, but it remains a work-first machine, not a fast one.

Will a Honda Pioneer 520 fit on ATV trails?

Yes, in most cases. At 50 inches wide it is built to the same width as a full-size ATV's trail, and it also fits in a full-size pickup bed. Check a specific trail's posted width limit before you go.

Owners describe a machine that needs little. On a GON forum thread , one owner who has had a Pioneer 520 since 2015 said it never gave trouble except CV boots, and that it was quicker and cleaner to replace the whole CV shaft than to re-boot it.

The same thread compared the Pioneer with the Kubota RTV 520 and Kawasaki Mule SX: the buyer chose the Honda for its gear drive and roughly 38 mph top speed, which is faster than the Kubota and Mule felt without being a 60 mph machine. Budget for CV boot inspections on any used Pioneer, since torn boots are the one repeat item.
