2026 Honda Talon 1000R FOX Live Valve: equipment and specifications
The Honda Talon 1000R FOX Live Valve is Honda's flagship sport side-by-side, pairing the 999cc dual-clutch twin used in the Pioneer 1000 with FOX's semi-active Live Valve suspension, which electronically adjusts compression damping. It has 17.6 in of front and 20.1 in of rear travel, 13.2 in of ground clearance and a 7.3 gal tank, and costs $23,799 plus $1,370 destination.
UTV Off-Road describes the Talon 1000R as having no turbo, no belt drive and no huge horsepower numbers, just a naturally aspirated engine paired with a dual-clutch transmission and a strong reputation for reliability. It admits that after time in newer, higher-horsepower four-seaters there is a noticeable difference in outright speed.
But says the test drive in tight, technical terrain was about control, traction and predictability more than speed, and that Honda keeps the interior simple, which carries over to the seating and comfort.

What a trail test found
ATV Illustrated says the Talon 1000X and the 1000R share a core of comfort features and powerful engines but their suspensions are worlds apart. The article describes the 999cc liquid-cooled engine as running smoothly with instant throttle response, and reports that a problem on the test ride turned out to be overinflated tires after a tire-pressure check.
The last point is a real ownership tip: tire pressure changes the ride of a machine with this much travel more than most riders expect.
Honda lists independent double-wishbone front with Showa shocks and 14.6 in of travel, a 3-link trailing arm rear with 15.1 in, 28 x 9-15 tires and direct front and rear driveshafts. The machine weighs 1,565 lb, has a 297 lb bed and seats two. Its 14.6 in and 15.1 in of travel is well below the 1000R's 17.6 in and 20.1 in, which is the main reason it costs $3,200 less.
1000X against the 1000R
The 1000X costs $20,599 against $23,799 for the FOX Live Valve 1000R, is 42 lb lighter (1,565 lb against 1,607 lb), has a wheelbase 2.4 in shorter and 0.4 in less ground clearance. It has 3.0 in less front travel and 5.0 in less rear travel. Choose the X for tight, technical trails and the price, and the R for fast, rough terrain and semi-active suspension.
Talon 1000X against the RZR XP 1000 Sport and Teryx KRX 1000
Polaris's RZR XP 1000 Sport is $600 below the Honda, and Kawasaki's KRX 1000 is $1,600 above.
2026 Honda Talon 1000X compared to the Talon 1000R FOX Live Valve
Both run the identical 999cc DCT twin, but the chassis tuning is different, not just the shocks: Honda's own pages list a shorter 87.6-in wheelbase here against 90.0 in on the R FOX Live Valve, and 14.6/15.1 in of suspension travel against the R's 17.6/20.1 in from its semi-active FOX Live Valve dampers, which this model does not have at all.
That gap in equipment and travel is also a $3,200 price gap before either model's destination charge: the 1000X trades outright suspension travel and electronic damping for a tighter-turning, lighter-feeling machine on technical trails.

But says the test drive in tight, technical terrain was about control, traction and predictability more than speed, and that Honda keeps the interior simple, which carries over to the seating and comfort. A specifications review of the four-seat 1000R-4 notes that some owners report needing suspension tuning, and says the FOX Live Valve suspension provides exceptional handling and control for a smooth ride on rough terrain.
