ATV On Demand says its riders found the Raptor delivers a good amount of low-end power, helpful in tricky low-speed rock gardens and off-camber sections, and that compared with their 450 race machines they were impressed by how efficiently it makes grip on slick, leaf-strewn hills or powering straight up rocky climbs, where a 450's more explosive power delivery and need to ride higher in the rev range is harder to use.
The reviewer says the 700R gains fully adjustable KYB shocks, giving much greater adjustability for different rider weights, styles and skill levels, and contrasts it with a cheaper Raptor that foregoes the adjustable suspension and adjustable front brake lever to reach a $9,699 price.
For a used Raptor 700R, establish whether gearing, tires, engine or exhaust have been modified before comparing it with the factory specification. A claimed maximum speed does not establish its condition or suitability. Offroad Grip
At 422 lb wet and 686cc, the Raptor is far lighter than the Polaris Scrambler XP 1000 S and the Can-Am Renegade. The difference is felt in tight terrain. The 32.7 in seat and 2.9 gal tank are set for sport use, and it costs $10,799 plus $700 destination.
Its reverse gear makes it more practical on a trail than a 450 race quad with none.
Check for overheating: look at the radiator, the fan and the coolant. Look at the suspension for leaks and worn bushings. Ask if the quad was jumped.
Check the fuel system, including the filter and lines. A stock quad with a heavy-rider setup should have the shocks set to the rider's weight, which the adjustable KYB units allow.
The Raptor 700R suits a strong, experienced rider who wants a big, light sport quad for trails, dunes and open fields and does not want to haul cargo.
Raptor 700R against the Scrambler XP 1000 S and Renegade
Polaris's Scrambler XP 1000 S and Can-Am's Renegade X xc 1000R are the larger sport quads.
The Raptor 700R is Yamaha's big sport quad, with a manual five-speed, reverse and fully adjustable KYB shocks. ATV On Demand says it gives good low-end power for technical trails and copes with slick hills that a 450 race quad struggles on.
Wild Ride ATV says the light weight gives nimble handling and quick acceleration. But that a portion of Raptor 700 owners have reported overheating, suspension issues and fuel-system complications, and that regular maintenance and timely repairs can mitigate them. Its SE page says some riders report suspension performance issues when tackling rough terrain or jumps and suggests aftermarket suspension parts or settings changes to improve ride quality.
ATV On Demand says the 700R has fully adjustable KYB shocks and an adjustable front brake lever, which the cheaper Raptor does not have.
