Engine size and price across the covered models
Compare displacement and base MSRP within each vehicle class, with explicit sample counts, tie handling and price-per-cc limits.

Engine size and price are associated in these covered records, but displacement does not determine power or equipment. Separate motorcycles, ATVs and UTVs before comparing. The calculation uses records with both a numeric MSRP and an explicit cc displacement; electric machines and displacement expressed only in cubic inches are excluded.
| Class | Records | Median displacement | At/below: count | At/below: median MSRP | Above: count | Above: median MSRP |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Motorcycles | 232 | 660cc | 117 | $6,399 | 115 | $15,699 |
| ATVs | 49 | 493cc | 25 | $4,899 | 24 | $10,064 |
| UTVs | 42 | 976cc | 22 | $15,349 | 20 | $21,899 |
A larger engine can cost more overall and less per cc
For a hypothetical 500cc machine at $7,500, price divided by displacement is $15 per cc. A 1,000cc machine at $12,000 is $12 per cc.
The second machine costs $4,500 more in total even though its ratio is lower. Neither calculation accounts for suspension, brakes, electronics, luggage, maintenance or whether the machine suits its operator.
Compare the engine design before interpreting the ratio
A two-stroke and a four-stroke do not deliver identical output from the same displacement. Cylinder count, tuning and rpm matter too.
The stroke-cycle guide explains that distinction. A numerical price-per-cc ratio cannot replace a manufacturer’s horsepower or torque rating, and it does not measure acceleration.
The groups are split at their median displacement, with every tied value included in the lower group. That can leave unequal group sizes, especially where several UTV trims share one engine.
Counts are included so a large cluster of same-size engines is visible rather than presented as two equal halves. The comparison describes this collection of named specifications, not the price effect of fitting a larger engine to an otherwise identical vehicle.
For a shortlist, compare actual models with similar seating, duty and certification. Add delivery and options to both prices and check the maintenance requirements for their engine configurations.
A cheaper cubic centimetre is of little use if the vehicle does not fit the job, the operator category or the available trailer. The base-price bands are the broader budget comparison.
Only named records carrying both numerical cc displacement and base MSRP are included; battery-electric and unit-ambiguous entries are excluded. Reviewed October 18, 2026.

- Engine size and price: does a bigger engine cost more? (362 models); Within a class the bigger engine costs more: 105% more for ATVs, 150% for motorcycles, 43% for UTVs.
Blog
Within a class, yes. The larger-engine half of the 243 priced motorcycles has a median starting price of $16,995 against $6,799 for the smaller half, $10,029 against $4,899 for the 50 ATVs, and $22,199 against $15,499 for the 47 UTVs. A cubic centimetre costs about $17 on the median motorcycle, $19 on an ATV and $22 on a UTV, so compare price per cc only inside one class.

What the bigger half costs, by class
Starting price of the smaller-engine and larger-engine halves, by class
- Class
- Models; Median engine; Smaller half, median price; Larger half, median price; Median price per cc.
The smaller half of each class is engines up to 693cc for motorcycles, 449cc for ATVs and 976cc for UTVs; the larger half starts at 745cc, 493cc and 993cc. The median price per cc of the smaller half is $22 on motorcycles, $26 on ATVs and $22 on UTVs, against $14, $15 and $22 for the larger half: a bigger engine costs more in total and, on motorcycles and ATVs, less per cc.
The cheapest and dearest cubic centimetre in each class
Motorcycles; 2026 Harley-Davidson Street Bob : $8 per cc (1,917cc at $14,999); 2027 KTM 50 SX : $102 per cc (50cc at $5,099).
ATVs; 2027 Can-Am Outlander 1000 : $13 per cc (1,001cc at $12,999); 2027 Kawasaki KFX 50 : $55 per cc (50cc at $2,699).
UTVs; 2026 Polaris Ranger 1000 : $14 per cc (999cc at $14,299); 2026 Polaris Ranger 150 EFI : $43 per cc (150cc at $6,499).
The highest price per cc in each class belongs to its smallest engines (50cc, 50cc and 150cc), because a fixed amount of machine is spread over little displacement, and the lowest to engines of about a liter or more.
How to use it
Use displacement to place a model inside its class, and read the price against the class medians above. A model far from its class median is one where equipment, brand or purpose drives the price; the model page lists what the machine includes. The starting price post shows the prices themselves, and the two-stroke and four-stroke page covers what displacement does not tell you about power.
Engine size and price questions
Does a bigger engine cost more on an ATV?
Yes. The larger-engine half of 50 ATVs has a median starting price of $10,029 against $4,899 for the smaller half, about 105 percent more.
Does a bigger engine cost more on a motorcycle?
Yes. The larger-engine half of 243 priced motorcycles has a median of $16,995 against $6,799, about 150 percent more.
Does a bigger engine cost more on a UTV?
Yes, by about 43 percent: $22,199 against $15,499 among 47 UTVs; many UTVs share one engine size, so seats, cab and equipment decide more of the price.
What is the median price per cubic centimetre for an ATV?
About $19 among 50 ATVs, against about $17 for motorcycles and $22 for UTVs. Compare price per cc only inside one class, because equipment and purpose differ between them.
Which ATV has the lowest price per cubic centimetre?
The 2027 Can-Am Outlander 1000, at about $13 (1,001cc at $12,999). The highest is the 2027 Kawasaki KFX 50 at about $55.
Which motorcycle costs the most per cubic centimetre?
The 2027 KTM 50 SX, at about $102 per cc (50cc at $5,099); the lowest is the 2026 Harley-Davidson Street Bob at about $8.
Should I buy the cheapest machine per cubic centimetre?
No. Price per cubic centimetre ignores class, equipment and use; it describes the lineup and does not rank the machines.
Does displacement tell me how powerful an engine is?
Only roughly. Two engines of one size can differ widely in output, so use the horsepower or torque figure on the model page where the manufacturer publishes one.
