How manufacturers state weight: curb, wet, dry and no fuel

Read weight bases before comparing machines
includes counts by stated basis, a load subtotal and kilogram-to-pound conversion.

Blog

A weight comparison starts with the measurement basis. Curb, wet, dry, estimated dry, running-order and no-fuel figures do not all include the same materials.

The covered records keep those labels separate. Do not rank two machines as lighter and heavier until their definitions, equipment and units match.

A dry weight is an input, not the completed trailer load

Fuel, operating fluids, accessories, tools and luggage can change the actual transport weight. A dry number can exclude some of those items, while a wet or curb specification can still exclude optional equipment. Read the manufacturer’s definition rather than assuming that a familiar word includes every item you have fitted.

For example, a hypothetical 1,600 lb published weight plus 85 lb of accessories and 40 lb of equipment makes a 1,725 lb subtotal before anything excluded by the published basis. That arithmetic is useful only when the additions are not already included. Counting a factory roof again would overstate the load, while leaving an aftermarket cab out would understate it.

Keep the unit and the basis together

One kilogram equals about 2.20462 pounds. A 200 kg figure is therefore about 441 lb, but converting the unit does not convert dry weight to wet weight.

A no-fuel figure also remains no-fuel after conversion. Keep the original label beside any converted number so it cannot silently become a ready-to-ride comparison.

For a trailer or lift near its rating, weigh the machine as it will be carried. Then check the ramp’s stated single-ramp or pair capacity, the trailer’s payload and axle limits, and the tow vehicle’s payload and combined rating. The weight and tongue-load guide separates those ratings; the load calculator performs the arithmetic once the actual inputs are known.

How manufacturers state weight: curb, wet, dry or estimated on 362 models; Manufacturers state weight on 7 different bases, and a lighter machine is not always lighter.

Blog

The weight on a spec sheet is not one measurement. Across 362 current models it appears on 7 different stated bases: curb, wet, dry, estimated dry, running order, fueled and no fuel. A further 62 motorcycle figures carry no qualifier at all. Only 23 of the 51 ATVs share the largest basis, and 22 of 49 UTVs do.

A full tank of fuel alone adds about 25 pounds on the median ATV and 57 pounds on the median UTV, which is more than the gap between many neighboring models. Compare two weights only when the basis matches.

One number, several measurements

Manufacturers publish weight because buyers ask for it. They do not agree on what to weigh; one states the machine with fluids and a full tank. Another states it with no fuel. A third publishes an estimate of the machine with nothing in it.

Those are different machines by tens of pounds
a comparison that ignores the difference will call the wrong model lighter.

Motorcycles show the most variety. 162 of the 224 motorcycles carry a qualifier in the record, spread across 5 different bases. The other 62 carry only a number under the wet weight row. 8 lead with kilograms.

ATVs and UTVs use a curb weight row and add a qualifier only where the manufacturer does. 39 models across the two classes state an estimated dry figure. That is the softest number in the table, because an estimate of a machine with no fluids is the hardest to check.

Lightest and heaviest in each class

The lightest motorcycle in the set is the 2027 Yamaha PW50 at 90 lb; the heaviest is the 2025 BMW R 18 Transcontinental at 955 lb (fueled). The median is 448 lb.

Among ATVs, the 2026 Suzuki QuadSport Z50 is the lightest at 174 lb, and the 2027 Can-Am Outlander 6x6 is the heaviest at 1,227 lb (estimated dry). The median is 650 lb.

Among UTVs, the 2026 Polaris Ranger 150 EFI is the lightest at 673 lb (estimated dry), and the 2027 Polaris Ranger XD 1500 NorthStar is the heaviest at 2,790 lb (estimated dry). The median is 1,694 lb.

Read the qualifier beside each of those
a lightest model stated dry and a heaviest model stated with fluids are not measured on the same scale.

What a full tank does to the number

Fuel is one of the largest single differences between a dry figure and a wet one. Gasoline weighs about six pounds a gallon, so a tank adds weight in proportion to its size.

The median tank is 3.7 gallons on a motorcycle, 4.2 gallons on an ATV and 9.5 gallons on a UTV. Those hold about 22, 25 and 57 pounds of fuel when full.

Engine oil, coolant and brake fluid add more on top; a weight stated with no fuel or fluids can sit well below the same machine ready to ride.

How to compare weights honestly

Match the basis first. Two curb weights can be compared. A curb weight and an estimated dry weight cannot, unless you add the fuel and fluids to the second.

Then compare in pounds. 8 motorcycle pages lead with kilograms, so convert at about 2.2 pounds to the kilogram before comparing.

Finally, check the source. Each model page shows the manufacturer's own wording; if a weight matters for trailering, the weight and tongue load page explains which figure to use, and the trailer load match calculator does the arithmetic.

Worth knowing

38 model pages carry no weight at all. Ask a dealer for the weight before you plan a trailer or a lift.

How manufacturers state weight questions

What is the difference between curb weight and dry weight?

Curb weight counts the machine with fluids and usually a full tank. Dry weight leaves out fuel and fluids, so it is lower by the weight of the tank, the oil and the coolant. Manufacturers differ on the exact definition.

Why does one manufacturer's weight look lower than another's?

Often the basis differs. A figure stated with no fuel will read lower than the same machine stated with a full tank. Check the words beside the number before treating one model as lighter.

How many current models state an estimated dry weight?

39 models across ATVs and UTVs. It is an estimate of the machine with no fluids, so it is the least direct figure of the bases in the table.

How much does a full tank of gas add to a machine's weight?

About six pounds per gallon. The median ATV tank is 4.2 gallons, so about 25 pounds when full. The median UTV holds 9.5 gallons, about 57 pounds.

Which current ATV is the lightest?

The 2026 Suzuki QuadSport Z50, at 174 lb; the heaviest is the 2027 Can-Am Outlander 6x6 at 1,227 lb (estimated dry). Both are as each manufacturer states them.

Which current UTV is the heaviest?

The 2027 Polaris Ranger XD 1500 NorthStar, at 2,790 lb (estimated dry). The lightest is the 2026 Polaris Ranger 150 EFI at 673 lb; check the basis beside each number before comparing them.

What is the median weight of a current motorcycle here?

448 lb across 224 motorcycles with a stated weight
The range runs from 90 lb to 955 lb, on bases that vary from model to model.

Do all motorcycle pages state weight in pounds?

Most do. 8 lead with kilograms, which convert at about 2.2 pounds to the kilogram; the original wording stays on the model page.

Can I use a spec sheet weight to check trailer capacity?

Only with care. Use the basis that includes fluids and a full tank, then add gear. A dry weight understates the load. The trailer weight page explains the ratings, and the calculator does the arithmetic.

How many bases do manufacturers use for weight?

7 stated bases across the 362 models here, plus motorcycle figures that carry no qualifier; motorcycles use the most, and ATVs and UTVs cluster on a curb figure with a few dry, wet and estimated dry exceptions.

Is a lighter machine always easier to handle?

Not always. Weight distribution, center of gravity and wheelbase matter as much as the total; a weight on a spec sheet is a starting point, and it says nothing about how the mass is carried.

Weight, ratings and tongue load; Which weight figure to use when a machine goes on a trailer.

Trailer load match calculator; Turns a machine weight into a check against a trailer and a tow vehicle.

Towing capacity across 100 ATVs and UTVs, and what the number leaves out; 59 of 100 pages list a rating. It is one limit among several.
