What the Ranger 1000 is built to do

It seats three across.

Ranger 1000 or Ranger XP 1000

The two Rangers share a 999cc twin and differ in tune and price. Outdoor Life notes that Polaris sells an upgraded Ranger XP 1000 with a dual overhead cam engine making 21 more horsepower. The current XP 1000 Premium costs $21,799 against $14,299 for the standard Ranger 1000.

The base machine is the value choice for hauling and towing. The XP is the choice for a buyer who also wants pace on trails.

Ranger 1000 in daily use: plowing, firewood and storage

Owners use the Ranger 1000 hard. Off Road Lord says the short first gear, Turf Mode and predictable CVT help a driver feather in for plowing without hammering the belt, that owners report the same on farms and wood lots with the dump bed and under-seat storage in daily use, and that what people like is tight turning in trees, easy trail manners, a quiet cab, plenty of in-cab and under-seat storage and a dump bed that makes firewood and feed runs simple.

It recommends the Ranger 1000 as a work-first UTV that fits gates and keeps costs in check, and describes it as quiet at cruise with seat foam thick enough for long days.

Ranger 1000 Premium and the XP 1000 as steps up

Two upgrades exist above the base machine. Outdoor Life says the Premium carries a $2,400 upcharge over the basic Ranger 1000 and adds aluminum wheels, a seat slider on the driver's seat, a steel front bumper and premium paint, and that the Ranger's 61 hp, mated to a two-speed CVT, was more than adequate to tackle any terrain the testers encountered.

Off Road Lord's list for the XP 1000 is 82 hp, 29-inch tires and 14 inches of clearance, with a roof and winch standard on many trims.

Ranger 1000 against the Mule Pro-FX, Defender XU and Pioneer 1000-5

The Ranger 1000 is the least expensive of the full-size 999cc utility machines, at $14,299 against $17,699 for Kawasaki's Mule Pro-FX 1000, $19,799 for the Can-Am Defender XU XT HD11 and $22,399 for Honda's Pioneer 1000-5 Deluxe. Its listed weight is also the lowest, an estimated 1,487 lb dry against 1,870 lb or more for the others, though makers state weight on different bases.
