Honda Monkey — specification reference

The Monkey combines a manual clutch and five-speed gearbox with 12-inch wheels, twin rear shocks and standard front ABS on the US version. Check the Grom’s exact brake trim when comparing the two mini-motorcycles. Similar engine capacity does not make the chassis, seat and brake equipment interchangeable.

Total MotorcycleMotorcycle News

Honda · Mini-moto

The 2026 Honda Monkey is a retro 124cc fuel-injected mini-moto with a five-speed manual gearbox, an inverted fork, twin rear shocks, 12-inch wheels and standard ABS. Reviewers praise its comfort, and note it is slow, with a top speed of about 55 mph. It suits a rider who wants a small, stylish, comfortable bike for short trips, and it costs $800 more than the Grom that shares its engine.

Why the Monkey is comfortable for a small bike

The Monkey is a comfortable mini-moto. Total Motorcycle credits twin rear shocks, fat tires and a well-padded seat with a smooth ride even on rough pavement, and says the low 30.5 in seat and light weight make it easy to maneuver when flat-footing into a parking space.

A Motorcycle News owner review calls the ride quality amazing and the seat the most comfortable on any motorbike, and says the brakes are great for its size and weight.

Speed and the used market

The Monkey is not fast. The same owner review says it remains fairly sluggish with about 55 mph as its top speed, and that unlike the Grom, very few Monkey owners customize their bikes. So nearly all used bikes are standard. That makes a used Monkey easy to check: look for a bike that matches the stock specification.

Real-world fuel economy and handling on the Monkey

The Monkey is frugal, though not to the extent Honda claims. The Motorcycle News reviewer called fuel economy excellent at about 135 mpg but said the claimed 180 mpg is a bit silly, and another tester averaged 100 to 126 mpg over varied roads ridden mostly flat out, short of Honda's quoted 190 mpg.

Cornering on tarmac is expectedly a bit sketchy because of the tiny 12-inch wheels, but you get used to it. The Monkey can be surprisingly rapid away from the lights and will sit at about 55 mph with the wind behind you.

Total Motorcycle lists a 1.5-gallon tank and describes a compact build with comfortably plush suspension for riders who care about function and the throwback styling for those who care about looks.

Monkey against the Grom, Dax and Trail125.

All four share the 124cc engine. The Monkey is the most expensive at $4,399, against $3,599 for the Grom, $4,199 for the Dax and $4,199 for the Trail125. It has the fork, shocks and ABS as standard. The five-speed manual it shares with the Grom.
