What makes a trials bike different
A trials bike is built for control, not speed. Total Motorcycle says the 301RR's fuel-injected power is easy to modulate for the surgical delivery that trials riding needs, that a handlebar-mounted switch chooses between two maps to change power delivery, and that a long kickstart lever gives easy one-kick starts anywhere on the course.
Honda's news release adds a lightweight, minimalist layout, with a half-gallon aluminum tank and a low 26.7 in seating area that gives the rider maximum mobility around the machine.
There is almost no seat: the rider stands.
Racing pedigree
Montesa is a Honda subsidiary and the choice of the perennial FIM World Trials Champion Toni Bou, who was heavily involved in developing the 4RT 301RR and 4RT 260R (Total Motorcycle). For 2027 Montesa says the Cota 301RR carries over its technical specification with a new red and white design, and that its 298cc engine derives from the motorcycle Montesa uses in the Trial2 World Championship (M Sports).
Fuel, weight and setup on the Cota 301RR
A trials bike is tiny and light. The Cota 301RR is no exception.
The Cota 301RR is a trials motorcycle, so control reach, standing movement and the intended competition requirements matter more than a conventional seated commuting comparison. Keep fuel capacity and weight tied to the manufacturer’s stated measurement basis. Bikenrider
The write-up describes adjustable front and rear suspension so a rider can set up the bike for the terrain and a five-speed gearbox for steep climbs and descents.
Total Motorcycle adds that a retuned rear suspension, a solid rear sprocket and an optional lighting package arrived on both the 301RR and its Race Replica, and that the handlebar mode switch changes the engine map between two settings.

Honda gives the two as 169.0 and 172.0 lb with all fluids and a full tank.
