Keefer Inc. says the 125cc air-cooled fuel-injected four-stroke provides power through a four-speed semi-automatic transmission, that the suspension is on the soft side for trail riding yet better than expected for overall comfort, and that the front brake is powerful enough to lift the rear of the bike if you grab a handful on the street, adding that he does not recommend doing so.
It says all the switches are quality and work flawlessly and the simple instrument cluster shows speed, fuel consumption and an odometer with two trip functions.
Escondido Cycle Center, a dealer, says the reliable 124cc air-cooled single is not built for speed but excels in efficiency and smooth delivery.
Ride it on rough ground to feel the soft suspension. Test the front brake with care, since it is powerful. Compare it with the Honda Monkey and the XR150L.
The Trail125 suits a rider who wants a fun, efficient, easy-to-ride small bike for camps, farms and back roads. It is not a bike for highways.
The soft suspension can be improved with aftermarket shocks if you carry heavy loads. Because the bike is popular as a camping and farm machine, a used one may have been ridden on rough ground, so look at the wheels, the spokes and the underside for damage. Ask what accessories are included.
Trail125 against the Monkey and XR150L
Honda's Honda Monkey and XR150L are the closest small bikes in the range.
Honda Trail125 — specification referenceThe Trail125 is Honda's retro 124cc mini-trail bike with a four-speed semi-automatic gearbox. Keefer says the suspension is soft for trail riding but better than expected for comfort, and that its front brake is strong enough to lift the rear wheel, and Honda asks $4,199.
The Trail125 lists at $4,199 plus $300 destination. It is $600 above Honda's Grom at $3,599 and $200 below the Monkey at $4,399, and it weighs 20 lb more than the Dax 125's 236 lb. Its small tank means a short range, though the efficient engine helps.
A small air-cooled four-stroke is cheap to maintain, with a simple oil change and a chain or sprocket check being the main jobs. The fuel-injected engine starts easily in cold weather. The tank is small, so plan fuel stops on longer rides. The soft suspension can be improved with aftermarket shocks if you carry heavy loads.
Because the bike is popular as a camping and farm machine, a used one may have been ridden on rough ground, so look at the wheels, the spokes and the underside for damage. Ask what accessories are included.
