What the testers say
Dirt Wheels says Kawasaki provides a lot for the money with the KRX 1000, which does everything well with good power, smooth delivery, excellent handling and ride quality, great durability and trail comfort.
The report says the base model combines high-speed stability and cornering agility with cabin comfort and ride quality that make it an excellent mount for any adventure. UTV Off-Road in a long-term review adds that the power steering is light for low-speed maneuvering and well weighted for high-speed travel, notes that comfort is hard to judge from a 15-minute demo ride, and says a 6 ft 3 in driver moved the seat forward one or two clicks to get comfortable.
What the specifications say about the driving
The KRX's suspension is its selling point. It has a double-wishbone front and a 4-link trailing-arm rear with Showa 2.5 piggyback shocks, adjustable preload and 24-position compression damping. The engine has a compression ratio of 11.5:1 and two 50 mm throttle bodies, with an automatic CVT, and drive is selectable 2WD or 4WD with a locking front differential.
The 258 mm dual hydraulic discs stop the 1,894 lb machine on 31-inch tires. The ground clearance is 14.8 in at maximum and 14.2 in as standard. The bed holds only 351 lb, which is the tell that this is a recreation machine, not a work one.
KRX against the sport side-by-side field
At $22,199 the KRX 1000 costs $2,200 more than Polaris's RZR XP 1000 Sport at $19,999 and $1,600 less than Honda's Talon 1000R at $23,799. It weighs 1,894 lb, more than the Polaris at 1,586 lb estimated dry, and the Honda at 1,607 lb. The Kawasaki is the heavier machine and has the larger tires, and Can-Am's Maverick R at $39,699 sits well above them.
Teryx KRX 1000 against the RZR XP 1000 Sport and Talon 1000R
Polaris's RZR XP 1000 Sport and Honda's Talon 1000R FOX Live Valve are the closest 999cc sport rivals. The Kawasaki is the heaviest of the three.
A problems guide says owners who stay on top of maintenance tend to have fewer reliability issues and that many riders have a trouble-free experience. But lists sporadic electrical problems, including the dashboard display and power steering malfunctioning, and overheating in extreme conditions or at high speed for extended periods.
It is a compilation and does not give counts, so use it as a checklist on a used KRX: check the display and steering assist, and look at the cooling system and CVT belt, which run hot under sustained load.

Kawasaki tunes the naturally aspirated 999cc parallel twin to 110 hp with 75.2 lb-ft of torque on the four-seat version. Two 50 mm throttle bodies feed it.
A compilation guide lists sporadic electrical faults, including the display and power steering, and overheating under sustained hard use. It says well-maintained machines have fewer issues.
The problems noted for the two-seat KRX apply to the four-seat one, because it uses the same engine and drivetrain. A problems guide lists sporadic electrical issues, including the display and power steering, and overheating during extended high-speed or extreme use. A four-seat machine carrying a full load puts more demand on the cooling system than a two-seat one.
