The SX uses a 401cc air-cooled single and a more compact chassis than a Pro-MX or Pro-FX. Its 1,100 lb towing rating requires the specified hitch equipment. For transport in a pickup, check the actual bed dimensions and the truck, ramp and tailgate ratings against the loaded machine.

The Kawasaki Mule SX 4x4 XC is Kawasaki's smallest and lightest current side-by-side: a 401cc air-cooled single with fuel injection, drum brakes at all four corners, a 399 lb bed and a 1,100 lb tow rating that requires an optional hitch. It weighs 1,083 lb, seats two and costs $9,499 plus $940 destination; 2027 Kawasaki Mule SX 4x4 XC specifications and price.
Off-Road Official calls it a compact, utility-focused two-seater small enough to fit in the back of a full-size pickup while offering power to tackle rough terrain and haul gear, with a 401cc single making around 26 horsepower. The same source says the suspension gives a smooth, comfortable ride at low speeds on standard terrain. But a stiff and jolting ride off-road at higher speeds.
UTV Action adds that the MacPherson-strut front suspension is comfortable at relaxed speeds even in rugged terrain but its 3.1 inches of travel is not enough for a fast pace in rough going, and says the Mule's suspension is tuned for comfort at sensible speeds on decent terrain because it is a pure-utility machine.
What you get and what you give up
UTV Action lists the top XC SE trim, at $9,399 in its test, as coming with Super Black bodywork, 26-inch tires on 12-inch cast-aluminum wheels, a roof, an under-seat compartment and LED headlights. The machine has a 70.1 in wheelbase and 8.1 in of ground clearance, and a 4.2 gal tank.
The 3.1 in of travel at both ends and 8.1 in of clearance are the reason it suits smooth ground: it is a yard, farm-lane and workshop machine, not a trail car.
Mule SX against the cheapest rivals
Polaris's Ranger 500 and Ranger SP 570 weigh 1,155 and 1,168 lb estimated dry, and the SP costs $11,999. The Mule SX at 1,083 lb is 72 to 85 lb lighter and $2,500 cheaper than the SP. Yamaha's Viking EPS at $14,299 and Honda's Pioneer 700-4 at $15,999 are bigger and much more expensive.

Polaris's Ranger SP 570 is the nearest small utility rival, and Yamaha's Viking EPS is the larger step up.
2027 Kawasaki Mule SX 4x4 XC compared to the Mule PRO-FXT 1000 LE
The SX is a smaller machine, not a stripped-down PRO-FXT: Kawasaki's own spec sheets show a 401cc single here against the PRO-FXT's 999cc twin, drum brakes at all four wheels against the PRO-FXT's discs, and 873.1 lb less curb weight (1,082.7 lb versus 1,955.8 lb). That size gap tracks a $9,400 price difference before either model's destination charge and the PRO-FXT's convertible Trans Cab seating, which the fixed 2-seat SX does not have at all.
