Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 Ultimate specifications
Polaris · Utility
Vicarious tested the earlier Ultimate Trail and said its single-rider seat is the softest of all its competitors and comfortable for hours. It also noted that the engine is a 90 hp twin whose 952cc displacement is rounded up to 1000 for marketing, and that the navigation display offers route guidance, planned rides with friends and simple phone pairing. But adds roughly ten percent to the price.

What the Ultimate trim adds
ATV Trail Rider lists the Ultimate Trail trim as adding first-class paint, 27-inch tires, LED lighting, Ultimate bumpers and a 3,500 lb winch with synthetic rope. If you do not need the display, the Vicarious tester's alternative point stands: the lower-priced trims share the same engine. The Sportsman 600 line has less than half the power at a much lower price.
Who should buy it
Buy the Ultimate if you tow near 1,500 lb, ride long days and will use the navigation. It is a $15,999 machine, $4,200 above the 850 EPS. The 850 has 78 hp and the same 1,500 lb tow rating.
Ultimate against the Sportsman 850 EPS
Set the Ultimate beside the Sportsman 850 EPS and the differences are clear. The Ultimate makes 90 hp against 78, weighs 950 lb against 862 and costs $15,999 against $11,799, a $4,200 gap. Both have a 37 in seat, a 5.25 gal tank and a 1,500 lb tow rating, so the extra money buys power, equipment and the display, not more towing.
If the machine will be used mostly for work rather than for trail riding, the 850 EPS does the same job for less.
Ultimate or the Touring XP 1000 Trail
Polaris also sells a Sportsman Touring XP 1000 Trail at the same $15,999 price. So the choice is about equipment rather than money. The Ultimate is the trim with the RIDE COMMAND display, the 3,500 lb winch and the front bumper, all of which are listed on Polaris's page for this model.
Read the two spec sheets side by side at a dealer, and ask which one carries the 27-inch tires you want, because tire size changes ground clearance and the final drive feel more than most trim differences do.
Sportsman XP 1000 Ultimate against the Brute Force 750 and Grizzly EPS
Kawasaki's Brute Force 750 and Yamaha's Grizzly EPS cost $10,099 and $10,599 and weigh around 700 lb. The Polaris has 250 lb more weight and $5,000 more price, and it has a display and more power.
