1000PS ran a long-term test and says the brakes are powerful and give a high degree of safety even at higher speeds, that riders up to 1.75 m tall find the seating position nearly perfect and taller riders up to 1.87 m find the space adequate though they may want more legroom, and that on the motorway the scooter reaches 140 to 145 km/h, keeping pace with traffic.

It cautions that while a Burgman means proven quality and reliability, competitors offer similar or better features at a lower price.

ScooterLab says like all battleship-sized scooters it can suffer some turbulence towards its upper limits, sitting at 85 mph without problems and occasionally showing 96 mph on the speedometer. The write-up says the scooter was like riding a large, comfy, weather-protected armchair with great storage under the seat and behind the apron.

But that at a UK price of £6,999 you would expect an adjustable screen, since Honda's Forza 350 gets an electric screen and costs about £1,200 less.

Suzuki's US list price is $8,949. That is $2,550 above Yamaha's XMAX at $6,399. The two testers' complaint is the same: the Burgman's age shows in its equipment and its price.

Its case is the comfort, the storage and the reputation for reliability.

What the price gap means

ScooterLab's UK price of £6,999 against a Honda Forza 350 that costs about £1,200 less means the Burgman carries a premium of roughly 17 percent. In the US the gap to Yamaha's XMAX is $2,550, or about 40 percent. Both testers accept the Burgman's comfort and reliability but say the money buys a bike that lacks newer features.

So the decision comes down to whether the armchair seat and the storage are worth the premium.

The Burgman 400 suits a commuter or a tourer who wants an armchair-comfortable, weather-protected scooter with lots of storage and is not chasing the newest equipment.

Burgman 400 against the XMAX and ADV160

Yamaha's XMAX is the direct maxi-scooter rival, and Honda's ADV160 is a smaller, cheaper alternative.

Suzuki Burgman 400 — specification reference

The Burgman 400 is Suzuki's maxi-scooter, praised for comfort, storage and strong brakes, and criticised for missing modern features. 1000PS says buying a Burgman means proven quality but rivals offer similar features for less, and Suzuki asks $8,949.
