Can-Am Spyder RT — specification reference

The published 494 lb load rating has to accommodate the occupants and other counted load. Two hypothetical 180 lb occupants and 40 lb of luggage use 400 lb, leaving 94 lb before accessories and anything else included by the operator’s guide. The storage volume is a separate measurement; filling the cases does not increase the weight limit.

Check the RT trim on the quote. A review of an older RT Limited does not establish the standard equipment or dry weight of a different RT configuration.

Autotrader

Can-Am · Three-wheeler

The Spyder RT is Can-Am's three-wheel touring machine, with a 1,330cc Rotax triple, stability control and lots of storage. Rider criticised a throttle hitch in some ride modes and Autotrader found the engine tired with two adults and luggage, and Can-Am asks $27,999.

Rider Magazine tested the RT Limited and says that since the original 2007 Spyder, the Vehicle Stability System has used steering, engine-speed, wheel-speed and other sensors to reduce engine power or brake individual wheels to keep the vehicle under control.

Its 6 ft 4 in tester says he loves a big bike with big power and comfort, but that both the standard and Eco ride modes showed a noticeable hitch in initial throttle application and that irregular power pulses plague the Eco mode at lower speeds. It also praises sporty spoked wheels with grippy tires and Brembo brakes that offer serious stopping power.

Autotrader says the power was sufficient with its writer's 10-year-old daughter as passenger but that the engine would get tired with two adults and a full load in the storage compartments. It quotes the 1.3-liter Rotax inline-three as rated at 115 horsepower and 96 lb-ft of torque, moving a machine with a dry weight of 1,021 pounds.

The RT's 115 hp and 96 lb-ft are shared with the rest of the Spyder line. So the weight of the touring body is what tires the engine. Can-Am lists a 29.7 in seat and a 7 gal tank at $27,999, which is $5,700 more than the Spyder F3 at $22,299. The extra money buys the fairing, the storage and the touring equipment.

Checks before you buy

Test the throttle in each ride mode for the hitch Rider reports. Ride it with a passenger if you plan to tour. Load the storage compartments. Compare it with the Honda Gold Wing and the Indian Roadmaster.

Who it suits

The Spyder RT suits a touring rider who prefers three wheels and wants storage and weather protection. A rider who plans to carry a passenger and heavy loads in hills should test the engine's response first.
