How the Gold Wing rides

The Gold Wing's strength is the way it covers distance. SlashGear calls it an excellent ride with a smooth and powerful engine and modern features to keep a rider connected and comfortable for days, and reports that a 5 ft 9 in rider sat upright without discomfort. Motorcycle.com rode 673 miles from Alabama to Daytona and appreciated the placid ride of the double-wishbone front suspension and the way the DCT chose the correct gear.

The rear is a Pro-Link system on a single-sided swingarm that adjusts for passenger and luggage weight (Road & Track).

Weight, and what it means at low speed

Curb weight ranges from 802 to 856 lb depending on trim, according to SlashGear. The flat-six has ample power to move it. Road & Track adds that the weight is apparent as speed bleeds off, and that low-speed control requires the basics of motorcycling: look where you want to go and drag the rear brake in slow maneuvers.

A rider new to big tourers should practice in a parking lot before a long trip.

Which Gold Wing to buy

The base six-speed is the least expensive way in, and the DCT trims add an automatic. SlashGear says power reaches the rear wheel by a six-speed manual on base trims and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic on middle and upper trims. Road & Track's price ladder ran from $25,975 for the low-seat six-speed to $34,175 for the airbag-equipped twin-clutch 50th Anniversary Tour.

Gold Wing against the Roadmaster, R 18 Transcontinental and Road Glide

The Gold Wing is lighter than Indian's Roadmaster and the BMW R 18 Transcontinental, at 806 lb against 919 lb and 954.6 lb, and $25,500 against the Roadmaster's $34,999. It is also the only one here with a six-cylinder engine, an 1,833cc flat-six.
