Suzuki DR-Z4SM specifications

Suzuki · Dual-sport

The report calls the bike a soft, friendly supermoto that is not intimidating, with relaxed suspension and a gentle power delivery even in the most aggressive mode, and says the engine feels a little underpowered on A-roads and sits high in the revs above 60 mph with only five gears. Total Motorcycle describes it as based on the established DR-Z400S dual-sport with the same torque-rich 398cc DOHC engine in a light chassis with sportbike tires.

Motorcycle News says the DR-Z4SM is not a comfortable place to be, that the seat is incredibly hard even on a short journey, and that taller riders may find the footpegs too high. It says adjustable suspension and decent brakes take care of the hardware, with three rider modes that change throttle response, switchable ABS to turn off the rear, and three levels of traction control.

The DR-Z4SM has the same 90.0 x 62.6 mm bore and stroke and 11.1:1 compression as the DR-Z4S, a 120/70R17 front tire, a 57.7 in wheelbase and 10.2 in of ground clearance. It is 7 lb heavier than the dual-sport at 340 lb and its seat is 1.2 in lower at 35.0 in. Its sibling has the 21-inch front wheel and 11.8 in of clearance for the dirt.

DR-Z4SM against the supermoto field

At $7,999 the DR-Z4SM costs $1,950 more than KTM's 390 SMC R at $6,049 and $4,500 less than KTM's 450 SMR at $12,499 or $5,400 less than the 690 SMCR at $13,399. The Suzuki is the gentle one of the group. If you want a friendly street supermoto, it fits; for a sharper, more powerful bike, look at the KTMs.

Riding position and gearing on the road

Motorcycle News's complaints are about position and gearing. A very hard seat and high footpegs make long rides tiring, and a five-speed gearbox with the engine high in the rev range above 60 mph limits highway use. The supermoto is at its best on short, twisty roads and in town, where its 35.0 in seat, 310 mm front disc and three rider modes suit the job.

The 57.7 in wheelbase is 0.9 in shorter than the DR-Z4S's and the ground clearance of 10.2 in is 1.6 in lower, which is what a road-going supermoto needs.

Price and equipment against KTM

Their tanks are close at 2.38 gal and 2.3 gal. The Suzuki's advantage is its reputation for reliability and the gentle nature that the testers describe. For a rider who wants a friendly, easy supermoto without aggression, that is the point.

DR-Z4SM against the 390 SMC R and 450 SMR

KTM's 390 SMC R is the closest street-legal supermoto, and the 450 SMR is the race bike.

2027 Suzuki DR-Z4SM questions

Is the Suzuki DR-Z4SM comfortable?

Motorcycle News says the seat is incredibly hard even on a short journey and taller riders may find the footpegs too high. So it is not a comfortable bike for long rides.

What electronics does the DR-Z4SM have?

Motorcycle News lists three rider modes that alter throttle response, switchable ABS to turn off the rear and three levels of traction control.

The Suzuki DR-Z4SM is the supermoto version of Suzuki's DR-Z4 platform: a 398cc liquid-cooled DOHC single with a five-speed gearbox and a single 310 mm front disc. It weighs 340 lb at the curb, has a 35.0 in seat, a 2.3 gal tank and 10.2 in of ground clearance, and Suzuki lists it at $7,999.

At $7,999 the DR-Z4SM lists rider modes, switchable rear ABS and three levels of traction control, which is a modern electronics package. KTM's 390 SMC R costs $1,950 less at $6,049, and KTM lists 154 kg (about 340 lb) without fuel against the Suzuki's 340 lb curb weight. So the KTM is lighter on a like-for-like basis. Their tanks are close at 2.38 gal and 2.3 gal.

The Suzuki's advantage is its reputation for reliability and the gentle nature that the testers describe. For a rider who wants a friendly, easy supermoto without aggression, that is the point.
