Motorcycle News says Triumph has gone to town on the engine, chassis and electronics to stay ahead of its naked sports middleweight rivals and has sharpened its pencil on price as well. It says Street Triples have always cornered beautifully, based on the Daytona 675, and that road riders often favor the R model with its softer, less racy suspension.
The report adds that the triple's throttle is friendly at low speed, the slip-and-assist clutch is light, and while the seat is 10 mm lower than the RS's (and 1 mm higher than before) it is comfortable all day, even for tall riders.
An owner review from the same page says the seat and suspension are better than on the 675, the brakes are first class and the bike behaves well under heavy braking.
Street Triple against the bigger nakeds
At $10,595 the Street Triple costs $6,100 less than BMW's R 1300 R at $16,695 and $12,100 less than BMW's M 1000 R at $22,695, and weighs 417 lb against 527 lb and 438.7 lb. BMW's G 310 R at $5,195 is cheaper but much smaller. Against the German bikes, the Triumph offers a lighter weight and a lower price.
Where the R sits in the Street Triple range
Triumph sells the Street Triple in several forms and the R is the road-focused one. Motorcycle News says the RS is the racier bike with a seat 10 mm higher.
The R's $10,595 price is the reference point, and it weighs 417 lb wet with a 3.96 gal tank. If you ride roads and not tracks, the softer R setup suits you, and you save the RS's premium.
Power, torque and the revs it likes
The 765cc triple makes its 118.4 hp at 11,500 rpm and its 59 lb-ft at 9,500 rpm, which are high in the rev range. So the engine rewards a rider who uses the gearbox. Motorcycle News finds the throttle friendly at low speed, and the slip-and-assist clutch light.
So town riding is not a chore. The 55.20 in wheelbase, 23.7 degree rake and 3.85 in of trail are the numbers of a sharp-steering bike. At 3.96 gal the tank is on the small side.
The X-ring chain needs regular care.
Triumph lists Showa 41 mm upside-down Big Piston forks with adjustable compression and rebound, a Showa piggyback monoshock with 133.5 mm of wheel travel, twin 310 mm floating discs with Brembo M4.32 four-piston radial monobloc calipers and a 220 mm rear disc. The chassis measures 55.20 in between the wheels with 23.7 degrees of rake and 3.85 in of trail. The engine makes 118.4 hp at 11,500 rpm and 59 lb-ft at 9,500 rpm.
Street Triple 765 R against the R 1300 R and Trident 660
BMW's R 1300 R is the larger, heavier roadster, and Triumph's own Trident 660 is the cheaper sibling.
