KTM 890 Adventure R specifications, dimensions and price

KTM · Adventure

KTM’s 890 Adventure R uses an 889cc parallel twin, six-speed gearbox and WP XPLOR suspension with 240 mm travel at both ends. Its 880 mm seat, 20-liter tank and 215 kg fueled weight describe the R configuration. Those dimensions should not be substituted for another 890 Adventure trim.

Motorcycle News places it among the premium middleweight adventure bikes, against the Ducati DesertX, the Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro and the Honda Africa Twin. The report says the bike has proved largely reliable, though there have been a few minor niggles, and that some owners have experienced camshaft problems with the 890 engine platform. It credits the weight distribution to twin tanks that extend down around the top end of the engine.

So much of the fuel sits lower than you would expect.

Bikenrider rode the 890 Adventure R Rally for eight days over gravel, sand and tarmac. The reviewer says the light design and powerful 889cc twin, at 105 horsepower, made short work of gravel roads and sandy trails, that the seat supports extended rides, and that the windscreen gives adequate protection from buffeting on highways.

That is an owner's account, not KTM's own statement.

KTM lists WP XPLOR suspension with 240 mm of travel front and rear, a 1,528 mm wheelbase and 263 mm of ground clearance. The seat is 880 mm and the bike weighs 215 kg fueled. That figure is the fueled weight.

So it is not comparable with the dry numbers on the other KTM pages.

The 890 Adventure R suits a rider who wants a lighter, more off-road-capable adventure bike than the big-twin class, and is prepared for an 880 mm seat. The long travel and 263 mm clearance are its purpose. Anyone leaning on the touring side of adventure riding will find the Adventure R's rally-style ergonomics less relaxed than a Tiger 900 GT.

890 Adventure R against the DesertX and Tiger 900

Motorcycle News names the DesertX and the Tiger 900 Rally Pro as its main competition. So those are the rivals compared here.

KTM 890 Adventure R — specification reference

The 890 Adventure R is KTM's off-road-leaning middleweight adventure bike, with long-travel WP XPLOR suspension and low-slung twin tanks. Motorcycle News calls it largely reliable, with reports of camshaft problems on the 890 platform.

On Adventure Bike Rider one owner of an older 950 says it is so comfortable they can ride it for any distance and it is happy to go faster than they dare. While asking whether another bike will ever match it.

Another poster reports that the quickshifter and other features are fitted and enabled from new, then disabled after a month unless the owner pays about £800, as told to them by an 890 owner. That is an owner's account, not KTM's own statement.

Motorcycle News calls it largely reliable with a few minor niggles, and notes that some owners have had camshaft problems on the 890 engine platform.

KTM lists an 880 mm (34.6 in) seat and 263 mm (10.4 in) of ground clearance, on 240 mm WP XPLOR suspension at both ends.

KTM lists 20 L (5.28 gal) in twin tanks that extend around the top of the engine, which Motorcycle News says keeps much of the fuel low.
