BMW R 18 Transcontinental specifications
BMW · Cruiser
Rider Magazine says the thicker foam in the Transcontinental's seat adds nearly an inch of seat height, which resulted in more legroom and additional comfort during the 350- to 400-mile days on its ride from Colorado to California. It describes four analog gauges (speedometer, tachometer, fuel and power reserve) behind the fairing and an enormous 10.25-inch TFT color display with screens for vehicle information, music, phone and navigation via a smartphone app.

Total Motorcycle says the 2025 Transcontinental adds to the R 18 B's standard equipment fairing lowers, a body-color top case, seat heating, a chromed rearview mirror and an engine protection bar for added luxury, and that BMW refined the design and added detail and comfort improvements with the 18-inch rear wheel.
What the weight and size mean
At 954.6 lb road ready, the Transcontinental is about 194 lb heavier than the plain R 18 and about 198 lb heavier than a K 1600 GT. Its 29.1 in seat is 0.8 in higher than the R 18's. That is the cost of luggage, a full fairing and touring equipment.
Long-distance comfort comes from the seat foam, the fairing and the heated seat, and parking maneuvers are where the weight shows.
Against the Road Glide, Roadmaster and Gold Wing
Harley's Road Glide, Indian's Roadmaster and Honda's Gold Wing are the other full-dress tourers. The BMW is distinguished by the boxer engine and its retro look, where the Gold Wing is more technical and the American bikes more traditional.
BMW R 18 Transcontinental — specification referenceTwo-up payload calculation
The Transcontinental’s listed 434 lb payload must cover riders, luggage and fitted additions. Two 180 lb adults plus 50 lb luggage total 410 lb, leaving 24 lb of that listed allowance. Add accessories and riding equipment before deciding the combination fits the limit.
- The corresponding plain R 18 payload is 474 lb
- These are configuration-specific limits, not interchangeable ratings.

2025 BMW R 18 Transcontinental questions
How comfortable is the BMW R 18 Transcontinental?
Rider Magazine says thicker seat foam adds nearly an inch of seat height and more legroom, and it rode 350- to 400-mile days from Colorado to California.
What does the Transcontinental add over the R 18 B?
Total Motorcycle lists fairing lowers, a body-color top case, seat heating, a chromed mirror and an engine protection bar.
How heavy is the BMW R 18 Transcontinental?
BMW lists 954.6 lb road ready with a 29.1 in unladen seat, heavier than the R 18 cruiser by about 194 lb.
New vs used
- Two-up luggage allowance
- The listed payload is 434 lb; For a trip with two 180 lb riders and 50 lb of luggage, the combined load is 410 lb, leaving 24 lb for anything else counted in the load. Weigh riding gear and added equipment too before packing for a two-up trip.
The Transcontinental suits a rider who covers long distances on a big cruiser-styled tourer and wants a heated seat and a large display. It is a heavy machine that asks for experience.
Touring equipment around the big boxer
The Transcontinental's 6.3-gallon tank is larger than the R 18's listed 4.2 gallons. That extra capacity belongs to a different touring arrangement; it does not prove a particular range or fuel economy. A rider planning long-distance use should compare the seat, passenger space, wind protection and luggage as a complete setup, then use actual consumption to plan fuel stops.
Its 29.1-inch unladen saddle is higher than the R 18's 28.3-inch figure. Try the reach to the controls with the actual seat and accessories. Both use the large 1802cc boxer, whose physical layout is part of the fitting decision. A comfortable reach to the ground alone cannot establish adequate leg room or a comfortable knee angle.
The price figure cited here is the publication's $24,395 specification entry, not a promise of a current dealer transaction. Obtain a written quote identifying the model year and equipment. On a used Transcontinental, demonstrate the touring controls, locks and electrical equipment while stationary; engine condition does not establish the condition of the equipment that differentiates this model from the simpler R 18.
Demonstrate the passenger equipment
Have the seller demonstrate the passenger-related touring equipment and identify the controls available to the passenger. Inspect back support, foot support and luggage access with the motorcycle stationary and secure. Establish which keys or electronic functions operate each lock. If a feature is described as optional, confirm whether it is present on this example.
Replacing a missing accessory, lock or bracket can be a different purchase question from ordinary engine servicing, so ask for the relevant parts information before agreeing on the offer.
Ask about final-drive maintenance specifically
The touring R 18 uses a shaft final drive. Ask the workshop record to distinguish engine servicing from work on the final drive and inspect the relevant housings for leaks. A description such as fully serviced needs the details of what was done. The absence of a chain to clean does not mean the drivetrain requires no maintenance.
Use the Transcontinental's handbook and year-specific schedule rather than instructions for a belt-driven cruiser with a similar silhouette.
