BMW R 18 specifications
BMW · Cruiser
At 760.5 lb road ready with a 28.3 in seat, the R 18 is a big bike that sits low. That combination gives a low center of gravity. But the weight is still felt when parking or pushing it back.

BMW Insights, an enthusiast site, says the ride quality is exceptional thanks to well-engineered suspension and that riders love the classic looks, powerful engine and high build quality. It is an enthusiast's summary and not a tested comparison.
What the size implies
The 1,802cc engine is much larger than the engines on most cruisers. So power is not the issue: the character is low-revving and relaxed, and the price of the bike reflects BMW's finishing more than performance.
Against the R 18 Transcontinental and Indian Super Chief
The Transcontinental adds a fairing, luggage and seat heating and weighs 194 lb more (954.6 lb against 760.5 lb) and has a 0.8 in higher seat. The R 18 is the stripped cruiser, and it competes on style with Indian's Super Chief and Harley's Heritage Classic.
The R 18 suits a rider who wants a distinctive, well-finished cruiser and is willing to pay for engineering rather than raw performance. A rider who wants to tour will look at the Transcontinental or the Bagger.

2025 BMW R 18 questions
What changed on the 2025 BMW R 18?
Total Motorcycle quotes BMW saying it refined the design, added detail and comfort improvements and fitted an 18-inch rear wheel to make the bike more fun to ride.
How tall is the BMW R 18?
BMW lists a 28.3 in unladen seat height, which is low for a big cruiser, and a 760.5 lb road-ready weight for the 1,802cc bike.
What finishes does the BMW R 18 come in?
Total Motorcycle lists Black Storm Metallic as standard and an optional Option 719 Olivine finish in Velvet Green Metallic with a black powertrain.
The simpler cruiser and its actual equipment
The R 18's 1802cc boxer is shared with the touring family, yet the simpler cruiser is a different choice of equipment and riding position. Its listed 4.2-gallon tank is smaller than the Transcontinental's 6.3 gallons. For a planned trip, use actual consumption and a reserve rather than assuming that a large engine or large overall motorcycle implies a long distance between stops.
The 28.3-inch unladen seat and 68.1-inch wheelbase are useful fitting references. Try the foot controls and leg position around the engine while wearing the intended boots. A low seat cannot describe that reach on its own. If the bike has accessory controls or a different saddle, inspect those changes and obtain the original parts where available.
The publication-sourced $15,395 price is a reference entry, so ask for the actual model-year offer and equipment. Compare the cost of any planned luggage or wind protection separately with a factory touring model. Adding accessories can answer a particular rider's needs without making every aspect of the two motorcycles equivalent.
Exhaust and foot-control changes affect the fitting
A used R 18 may have an exhaust or control arrangement selected by a previous owner. Inspect where the rider's boots and legs sit with those parts installed, and ask whether the original equipment is supplied. Obtain the installation and approval information for a modification rather than assuming a familiar brand name establishes suitability.
Changes chosen mainly for appearance can affect the practical reach to a pedal or the clearance available around the boxer engine. Evaluate that actual arrangement before relying on a factory photograph.
The cooling arrangement belongs to the model
This R 18's engine is described as air/oil cooled. Inspect the relevant cooling components and the engine's condition using the handbook rather than looking for a radiator arrangement borrowed from a liquid-cooled touring motorcycle. Ask about any warning indications, leaks or repairs, and connect those questions with the service record. The large boxer cylinders are conspicuous, but their appearance cannot show whether scheduled maintenance was completed or whether added accessories have changed access for servicing.
