Yamaha MT-09 specifications
Yamaha · Hyper Naked
Motorcycle News says the throttle map can be tailored through four engine modes, of which mode 1 gives more power than the throttle asks for, which makes it a bit too aggressive. The report says the changes to suspension, geometry and riding position make the MT-09 more engaging than the previous generation, and that ridden hard it tends to squat under heavy acceleration, though you can still steer on the power without much understeer.

It also mentions that the platform is shared with the XSR900 and Tracer 9, on which there have been some issues with small items such as indicator fitment and bolt corrosion. The same publication on the MT-09 SP says it took Yamaha until 2018 to answer riders who liked the punchy triple but not the low-rent suspension, calls Brembo Stylema calipers the most welcome change, and says the standard MT-09 is keen steering and fun to chuck around, particularly at lower speeds and around town.
The MT-09's 890cc engine has a 78.0 x 62.1 mm bore and stroke and a compression ratio of 11.5:1, and it sits in a chassis with a 56.3 in wheelbase, 24.7 degrees of rake and 4.3 in of trail. So it is longer and slightly more stable than the MT-07's 54.9 in wheelbase.
The fork is a 41 mm inverted unit adjustable for preload, compression and rebound with 5.1 in of travel, and the rear shock has 4.6 in.
MT-09 or MT-09 SP
Motorcycle News describes the SP as the version with better suspension, Brembo Stylema front calipers and extra rider modes, including a Track Mode that adjusts engine braking. If your riding is on good roads with the occasional trackday, the SP's suspension is worth the extra cost. For commuting and back roads, the standard bike at $10,899 is the better buy.
The MT-09 in numbers against the MT-07 and MT-10
The MT-09 sits in the middle of the line on every measure. It weighs 425 lb against 403 lb for the MT-07 and 467 lb for the MT-10, costs $10,899 against $8,599 and $14,999, and has a seat at 32.5 in against 31.7 in and 32.9 in.
Its 41 mm inverted fork is adjustable for preload, compression and rebound, which the MT-07's is not. These engine families and suspension settings differ; the comparison describes listed configurations rather than a sequence a rider must progress through.
The Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S23 tires are a sportier fitment than the MT-07's Dunlop Sportmax Q5A. The rear suspension has only 4.6 in of travel, 0.5 in less than the MT-07's, a reason a rider may find the back end firm on rough roads.
MT-09 against the Z900 and Monster
Kawasaki's Z900 is the closest Japanese rival, and Ducati's Monster is the premium option. The Ducati is $2,400 more expensive and 39 lb lighter.
Yamaha MT-09 — specification reference2026 Yamaha MT-09 compared to the MT-07
The MT-09's three-cylinder 890cc CP3 is a different engine family from the MT-07's twin-cylinder 689cc CP2, not a bored-out version of it, and Yamaha's own pages show that in the numbers: 22 lb heavier, a 0.8 in taller seat and 9 mpg lower published fuel economy (48 mpg against the MT-07's 57 mpg) for the extra cylinder and displacement.
The $2,300 premium over the MT-07 buys that third cylinder's extra top-end pull, which is the reason Yamaha positions this model a step above the MT-07 for a rider who has outgrown an entry-level naked and not as a direct upgrade path within the same engine family.
Yamaha · Hyper Naked
The 2026 Yamaha MT-09 is the step up from the MT-07: an 890cc three-cylinder CP3 engine in an upright naked chassis for riders who have outgrown an entry-level naked but do not want a full supersport. Its fuel economy is rated at about 48 mpg, the price is $10,899 plus destination, and it is unchanged from 2025.
