CP2 twins, CP3 triples and the separate off-road ranges
Road bikes. The MT range is the naked line: the Yamaha MT-03, Yamaha MT-07, Yamaha MT-09 and Yamaha MT-10. The sport bikes are the Yamaha R3, Yamaha R7, Yamaha R9 and Yamaha R1.
The Tracer 9 and FJR1300ES tour, and the Ténéré 700 and Yamaha World Raid are the adventure bikes.
Scooters, cruisers and dual-sports. The Zuma 125 and XMAX are scooters, the V Star 250 and Bolt R-Spec are cruisers, and the WR125R, XT250 and TW200 are dual-sport bikes.
Which Yamaha to buy
The MT-07 and the MT-09 are the two most popular ways in to a full-size Yamaha. The MT-07 costs $8,599 and weighs 403 lb, and the MT-09 costs $10,899 and adds a larger 890cc engine. A rider who wants a fairing should compare the R7 at $9,399 with the new R9 at $12,499.
For a first bike on a small budget, the MT-03 at $4,999 and R3 at $5,499 are the cheapest, and the XSR700 and XSR900 are the retro-styled versions of the MT engines.
A new rider who wants to go off-road has the WR125R, the XT250 and the TT-R230 to choose from, and the TW200 for a fat-tyred, low-seat alternative. Total Motorcycle calls the XT250 light, nimble and reliable, and RevZilla points out that the WR125R's 34.4-inch seat is not low for a beginner bike.
Yamaha’s small two-stroke trail bike
PW50 engine, controls and rider fit: compare its automatic transmission and low seat with the TT-R youth models before choosing a first off-road motorcycle.
Compare Yamaha motorcycles with Honda and Kawasaki
Yamaha sells motorcycles for children, off-road racers, commuters, sport riders and tourers. This page covers 33 current models, from the 49cc PW50 at $1,899 to the 998cc YZF-R1 at $19,199. The table lists class, engine, weight, seat height and starting price for each one.
Youth and trail. A child starts on the PW50 or the TT-R50E , moves to the TT-R110E and TT-R125LE , and then to the full-size TT-R230.
Racers step through the YZ65 and YZ85 to the YZ125 , YZ250 and YZ450F , with the WR250F and WR450F as the off-road versions.
According to Wikipedia , Yamaha Motor was founded in 1955 after separating from Nippon Gakki, now Yamaha Corporation, under founder Genichi Kawakami, and is headquartered in Iwata, Shizuoka. Wikipedia describes it as the world's second-largest motorcycle manufacturer.
The reviews quoted on the model pages describe a maker known for reliable engines: Motorcycle News says there has been little to question in Yamaha reliability for years, and owner sites list only small, specific complaints on individual models.
The PW50 kids bike and the TT-R50E are the cheapest at $1,899 each, and the cheapest bikes for adults are the MT-03 at $4,999 and the Zuma 125 scooter at $3,799.
The MT-07 has a 689cc engine and costs $8,599, and the MT-09 has an 890cc engine and costs $10,899, with a slightly higher seat and more power.
The MT-03 and YZF-R3 are the smallest road bikes, and the XT250 and TW200 are easy dual-sport bikes with low seats and simple engines.
The Yamaha YZ65 is a youth competition-bike choice. Compare its controls and chassis fit with the intended rider, and follow its manufacturer age, supervision and maintenance instructions rather than choosing by displacement alone.
