Yamaha WR450F specifications

Yamaha · Off-road

Total Motorcycle says the lower center of gravity gives a better-handling machine with a lighter feel, more agility and increased traction for tight, technical trail sections, and lists a more tractable, longer-pulling engine with revised ECU settings, an improved chassis and a lightweight brake system. Cycle World says the 450cc engine delivers its big torque in a trail-efficient way, that the ECU can be tailored through the Yamaha Power Tuner app, and that after a top-down overhaul in 2024 the 2025 model receives only a single-layer seat skin and fresh graphics.

Reach and weight

The seat is the practical limit: 37.6 in is 3.5 in higher than the TT-R230's, and it is a number that matters to any rider under about six feet. Yamaha lists a 256 lb wet weight, and the tank holds 2.0 gal, enough for a normal enduro loop but not for a long day between fuel stops. The fully adjustable KYB fork and shock have 11.8 in and 12.0 in of travel.

So the bike is set up for hard terrain and asks for a rider who can keep it moving.

Against the YZ450F and KTM 500 EXC-F

At $10,499 the WR450F is cheaper than KTM's 500 EXC-F at $13,499, by $3,000, and it shares its engine and frame with the YZ450F. It is also heavier than a motocross bike, because of its lights, fan and larger fuel tank.

The WR450F suits a tall, experienced rider who wants a Japanese four-stroke enduro with a competition engine and does not need a lower seat. A newer rider, or a shorter one, will get more use from a smaller-displacement trail bike.

WR450F against the YZ450F and KTM 500 EXC-F

The YZ450F is the motocross sibling, and KTM's 500 EXC-F is the European four-stroke enduro rival.

Yamaha WR450F — specification reference

Dirt Bike Magazine says the WR450F trail bike "has always had a blood kinship with the YZ450F motocross bike", and lists the off-road features: a wide-ratio five-speed gearbox, softer settings for the KYB suspension, a radiator fan, a headlight and taillight, a 2-gallon tank, an 18-inch rear wheel and an odometer. The same source adds that the bike comes with a taller seat height, which might present a problem for shorter riders.

Yamaha · Off-road

The WR450F is Yamaha's trail and enduro version of its YZ450F motocross bike, with softer suspension, a fan, lights and a wide-ratio gearbox. Dirt Bike Magazine warns that the taller seat may be a problem for shorter riders, and Yamaha asks $10,499.

2027 Yamaha WR450F questions

How is the Yamaha WR450F different from the YZ450F?

Dirt Bike Magazine lists a wide-ratio five-speed gearbox, softer suspension, a fan, lights, a 2-gallon tank, an 18-inch rear wheel and an odometer on the WR.

Is the Yamaha WR450F tall?

Yes. Dirt Bike Magazine says the taller seat might be a problem for shorter riders, and Yamaha lists 37.6 in.

Can the Yamaha WR450F engine be tuned?

Cycle World says the ECU can be further tailored to rider preference with the Yamaha Power Tuner app, in addition to the standard maps.

MotoSport says an owner of the 2025 WR450F can expect a reliable and powerful machine when properly maintained. That is a retailer's summary and not a durability test.

Competition-enduro equipment is a separate question

For a WR450F, identify the exact year and the engine, exhaust and gearing configuration before relying on a general WR description. Changes made for one rider's competition use may not suit another rider's terrain or local requirements. Ask for the original parts and the relevant setup information rather than assuming every modification improves the bike.

Inspect wear at the controls, footrests, wheels and suspension alongside the service record. A recently replaced tire or set of plastics does not establish engine hours. Clarify the actual work completed and the next scheduled tasks before comparing a used WR450F with a smaller WR250F or an apparently cheaper motocross machine. Their purposes and equipment need to match the intended route and event.
