Yamaha MT-03 specifications

Yamaha · Hyper Naked

BikeWale says it accommodated the riding position by keeping the elbows slightly out and holding the handlebar toward the edge, and concludes that if the purchase fits the budget and you want a reliable, performance-oriented, purist's motorcycle, the MT-03 is a good choice, and says an exorbitant asking price needs more than a feel-good factor to justify it. Moto Planet says the MT-03 makes most sense for A2 license riders, newer riders who want confidence without boredom and experienced riders who know that fun on real roads is not only about peak horsepower.

It puts the bike at 41.4 bhp, comfortably within the A2 license limit, and says the Honda CB300R has lightweight charm and classy styling but the Yamaha is the more rounded all-rounder with a twin-cylinder engine.

The MT-03 weighs 373 lb with a 30.7 in seat, the lowest in the MT line, and has a 54.3 in wheelbase and 25.0 degrees of rake. The engine has a bore and stroke of 68.0 x 44.1 mm and 11.2:1 compression. The 37 mm KYB inverted fork has 5.1 in of travel and the rear shock has 4.9 in with seven-step preload adjustment.

The MT-03 is a first big bike for a new rider, and a second bike for someone who wants a light, cheap and fun machine. It costs $3,600 less than the MT-07, and against Kawasaki's Z500 at $5,699 it is $700 cheaper. Those bigger machines have more power, but the MT-03's weight and price are what a new rider should compare.

How it compares in size with the bigger MTs

Set beside its siblings, the MT-03 is 82.3 in long, 29.7 in wide and 42.1 in tall. It is the lightest MT at 373 lb, 30 lb lighter than the MT-07 and 94 lb lighter than the MT-10, and it is the only one with a single front disc. It shares the 3.7 gal tank size of the MT-07 and MT-09 and returns the best economy in the line at 62 mpg.

That combination, low seat, light weight and a real range, is why it is often the first bike a new rider buys. Yamaha covers it with a one-year limited factory warranty.

MT-03 against the Z500 and Z650

Kawasaki's Z500 is the closest in size and price, and the Z650 is the larger step up. Compare the price and weight columns.
