Honda · Youth motocross

The Honda CRF150R is a 150cc liquid-cooled four-stroke youth motocross bike with a Unicam engine, Showa suspension, a five-speed gearbox and disc brakes at both ends. It is built for an advanced young racer moving up from an 85cc two-stroke or a CRF125F, and it gives the smooth power curve of a four-stroke in a scaled-down full-size chassis.

CRF150R or CRF150R Expert: which size fits

The CRF150R comes in two wheel sizes, and the wheel size decides who it fits. Motocross Hideout explains that the standard CRF150R has 17-inch and 14-inch wheels and suits a rider about 12 years old. While the CRF150R Expert, which the source calls the 150RB, has 19-inch and 16-inch wheels, a longer wheelbase and slightly stiffer valving.

The Expert's seat is 34.1 in tall, and the same source recommends it for riders between 5 ft 0 in and 5 ft 6 in, about 14 to 16 years old. Use Honda’s operator and competition guidance and assess control reach with qualified supervision. Do not treat an informal rider-weight estimate as a manufacturer load rating.

What the CRF150R is, and is not

The CRF150R is a small version of Honda's full-size motocross bike. Cycle World says it lets youth riders experience the power and performance of Honda's full-size four-stroke motocross bikes in a scaled-down version, with Showa suspension and a liquid-cooled, high-compression SOHC engine, and stresses that it is for advanced youth motocross riders and not to be confused with the CRF-F trail bikes such as the CRF125F, which have air-cooled engines, docile performance and softer suspension.

The trade-off against 85cc two-strokes is weight and price rather than power: a four-stroke of this size weighs a little more but delivers a smoother power curve.

CRF150R against the YZ85, KX112 and KTM 85 SX

The CRF150R is the only four-stroke in this group of youth motocross bikes. Yamaha's YZ85 and KTM's 85 SX are 85cc two-strokes, and Kawasaki's KX112 is a 112cc two-stroke. The YZ85 weighs 161 lb and lists at $5,199, the KX112 weighs 164.9 lb and lists at $5,799.

The KTM lists at $6,949, against the Honda's 185 lb and $5,499.

Honda CRF150R — specification reference

Most reported trouble comes from neglect. Motocross Hideout says the biggest problem it read about from CRF150R owners is when they do not ride the bike enough or maintain it properly, and an owner roundup at Engine Patrol describes riders who fit aftermarket carb or re-jetting kits to head off problems. The seat-height issue also leads some parents to consider a 230 or 250cc bike for a taller child.

The standard 17/14 CRF150R suits a rider around 12 years old. The CRF150R Expert with 19/16 wheels suits 14 to 16-year-olds between 5 ft 0 in and 5 ft 6 in, according to Motocross Hideout. The bike is built for a rider of roughly 80 to 120 lb.

The Expert has bigger 19-inch and 16-inch wheels, a longer wheelbase, a 34.1 in seat and slightly stiffer valving, and costs $200 more at $5,699. Otherwise it is nearly the same bike as the standard model.
